I haven't read a book in 6 years and would like to start off with something that isn't too depressing or melancholy. I'm a big fan of military and sci-fi stories. Combinations of those two are fun as well. Anyone have any recommendations?

Since you like sci-fi try any of Philip K Dick, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlen, or Arthur C Clarke's books.

Gaunt’s Ghosts series by Dan Abnett. While some of the earlier books require surface level knowledge of Warhammer 40k, the rest of the series is hardcore military sci fi with some amazingly written characters.
