"Indeed, the question which was raised long ago, is still and always will be, and which always baffles us—What is Being?—"

Aristot. Met. 7.1028b

I ask you, /lit/. What is being?

>> No.10797384

The gerund of the verb to be
Alternatively, a synonim of living thing

Who cares what it is? It's just a fucking word. It's not like it has any objective meaning, it's just something we use to refer to a multitude of ideas and concepts

>what does this representation we've arbitrarily created of some idea or concept REALLY mean?
It means whatever the fuck you want it to mean. Philosophers and the greatest geniuses of humanity are stupid as hell sometimes, and I'm not even being ironic.

>> No.10797558

Being qua existence-as-such is the oneness (or compound) of form / actuality and matter / potentiality.
Parmenides (who Aristotle concurred with on this point) rather cleverly captured in by stating simply "By Being, it is".
Also, I only very recently began to appreciate the difference between level of explanation and being as laid out in the Categories.

Not that anon and while I agree it is just some stupid concept that can mean anything and so on... That's kind of the point, because we base our lives on it, we identify with stuff, we love stuff that are, we suffer for things that are, we see things becoming and then vanishing, we value stuff because of it. The point is not "let's decide for some dictionary definition of it", but what is this, arbitrary as it may seem at first glance, that has to do with literally everything?

If it means whatever the fuck you want it to mean, then damn, there is a lot that we have to talk about it.
