Paul Goodman, Noam Chomsky, Marshall McLuhan, Camille Paglia, pretty much every philosoper would tell you that education is a joke

The only value of university is getting qualified with a degree, otherwise exploring and learning things that interest you on your own time is the best education

Don't waste your money on this big big scam

I mean it never hurts to go through the essentials like the Greeks, Descarte, Kant, Kierkegaard, but those courses are typically pretty well constructed to give you an adequate introduction to the field. Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the marketplace, and cried incessantly: "I seek God! I seek God!" As many of those who did not believe in God were standing around just then, the madman provoked much laughter. Has God got lost? asked one. Did he lose his way like a child? asked another. Or is he hiding? Is he afraid of us? Has he gone on a voyage? Emigrated? Thus did they shout and jeer.

The madman jumped into their midst and pierced them with his eyes. "Whither is God?" he cried; "I will tell you. We have killed him -- you and I. All of us are his murderers. But how did we do this? How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideways, forward, in all directions? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying, as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us? Do we not need to light lanterns in the morning? Do we hear nothing as yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? Do we smell nothing as yet of the divine putrefaction? Gods, too, decompose. God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him.

"How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it? There has never been a greater deed; and whoever is born after us -- for the sake of this deed he will belong to a higher history than all history hitherto."

Here the madman fell silent and looked again at his listeners; and they, too, were silent and stared at him in astonishment. At last he flung his lantern to the ground, and it shattered into pieces and went out. "I have come too early," he said. "My time is not yet. This tremendous event is still on its way, still wandering; it has not yet reached the ears of men. Lightning and thunder require time; the light of the stars requires time; deeds, though done, still require time to be seen and heard. This deed is still more distant from them than most distant stars -- and yet they have done it themselves."

University isn't supposed to be easy. And nothing worth having is easy to get.

Unless you have dreams of going to grad school, obtaining a PhD and becoming a philosophy professor, don't do it; you could study philosophy on your own time, and disregard all the leftist crap philosophy departments tend to shove down your throat (if you're against leftism, that is).

Double major in philosophy and some employable field if you want to study it so bad. You'll have a shit ton of debt and no good way of paying for it if you avoid anything useful

While there are many arguments AGAINST studying philosophy in uni, I'd say the best argument for doing it is that you'll get A LOT more out of your studies by reading and engaging with professors and students than by reading on your own on the weekends after you're tired from your 9 to 5 job.

Also sorry I never answered your question.

As others have said, start with the Greeks. Maybe another good option is to read a book that covers multiple philosophers throughout time. I started with 'The Story of Philosophy' and haven't looked back.

>While there are many arguments AGAINST studying philosophy in uni
Because it isn't pragmatic if you're not very rich because debt for taking out student loans accumulates over the years and a philosophy degree has zero value in terms of potential employment. Of course, this problem could be solved by studying something useful alongside philosophy (double-majoring).

>> No.10775478

>>10775450
Philosophy does not have "zero value" wrt employment. Having a bachelor's degree gets you over the HR hurdle. Now you just need to prove you a) have a special skill (programming is obviously popular these days) and/or b) show that you can learn and think critically

I was obviously exaggerating a little bit, but you get my point. What I meant to say is that a philosophy degree by itself will likely not take you very far; you need other skills to accompany it.

Read Anthony Kenny's history of philosophy. Read an introduction to critical thinking. Pretty much any one will do.

I also strongly recommend you get a few volumes of the "Best American Essays" series so you can get an example of what actually strong topical essays, which you will be writing many of, look like.

Then you might read The Portable Greek Reader and The Portable Enlightenment Reader.

This. I recently read a book entitled "Living a Worthy Life", by some such academic, and on the very first page, it read:
"In 1922..."
I immediately stopped reading. What myopia! What dullness of the spirit! Does he think all meaning resides in 1992? Or is he going to waste our time, and the beginning of his own book, with some pedagogical cult? He spends years to waste seconds.
