How do I learn to think critically when reading works of literature? Like on the level of someone who took English at Uni and can actually engage with the text and do close readings.
After a novel is over I usually think things like, the prose was good, the plot was entertaining enough and maybe get a few insights into the historical period the novel is set in but thats about it.

You should be focused on finding faults rather things you like. As you compile the faults, think honestly about whether those faults were the exception or the rule.

If something annoys you, its not you being a brainlet, its more likely the author.

Do the inverse of this. Try to understand why you like something, but do it in a organic and holistic way instead of focusing on reductionist things (like: "muh plot" "muh pacing") like a retarded genre fiction reader. Read more lit critics, Bloom and Auerbach are a good start.
