Like it matters. Outside of the truly best unis on that list, i.e. Harvard, Stanford, and MIT, you are not guaranteed a job for getting a degree ANYWHERE else you go into Law or Medicine. Everyone and their mother has a master's degree these days. What matters is how you 'network' and how capable you are of acting on your ambitions

It's a case of schools working to do well in rankings instead of just working to do well. A lot of the factors that are accounted as arbitrary and do not reflect actual education standard (i.e. having professor who is cited X amount doesn't mean he's either a good teacher nor that his citations are actually worthwhile)

European Universities are usually not run for profit and so don't care about their ranking as much as it doesn't affect their breadline.

Getting a master’s is a cash cow for universities, you realize that right? They’re easy to get into and then you get absolutely gouged for money cause they know you want more credibility but you aint got the chops for a PhD so you’ll buy your way into higher education.

Yes, you can hit the diversity quota. Elite universities literally release charts every year to show how many international and women students they admitted. It is fully institutionalized. And you're writing something trendy about some tribe. You have a very good chance of getting admitted.

But let me tell you something about PhDs. What matters more than anything else is your writing. Don't worry about your grades or test scores. Your writing sample and SOP is what they care about the most. And yes, rec letters matter. This is why 'networking' has seeped so deeply into the humanities: you have to suck profs dicks and make nicey nice to get really good recommendation letters. But those three things, and your writing in particular, matter the most. I knew some Stanford peeps doing history PhDs that had GPAs below 3.5. They were such smart motherfuckers that they didn't really give a shit about turning in assignments because they were busy cultivating their writing and research skills and it paid off.

School ranking in general are completely worthless because they don't actually measure the performance of teachers and gets. Instead they focus irrelevant shit like how many books are in the library or how many square feet of classroom space the school has. It doesn't matter if that classroom space is rarely used or that its more efficient for libraries to focus on new technology rather than having books that never get used. The best schools according to these rankings are typically the biggest wasters.

Yeah, I got quite a bit of feedback, but it was on a level of "this is so bad, I can't even comment on it" from my prof. It was poor on a level of basic diction (Undergraduate research). Any recommendations for improving writing skills?

History. High employability degrees only i guess. What year/what was your research proposal about? As far as getting better at writing, pay attention to the feedback you're getting on assignments. Read more and pay attention to how good writers write. If you're serious about grad school, look into honors if you haven't.

Finally, and most importantly, are you cute?

I never enrolled to get employed. It was on contemporary American Literature and themes of U.S. economic decay. This definitely discouraged me quite a bit, but I know I have the drive to improve. Might take a semester off, but I'll have to see. I applied for honors next year, but I will have to see how I feel by the end of the summer.

I go to Johns Hopkins and it’s been an eye opening experience.

People here are normies but their work ethic floors me. I come from a shitty Pacific Northwest town and it amazes me how these people manage their time between study sessions, internships, and partying. I’m lazy compared to them. They are truly on another level.

Only schools that I would choose above this one (that I didn’t get into) are Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford. Yale sucks.

Maybe, I really don't know
Ironic that I worked about a month revising my paper and got rejected, for had just sent my unrevised thesis for the college I got in now. Maybe I should have done the same thing, meh

My current adviser is quite well known and have a higher rank in "publish or perish ladder of doom" compared to the other professors whom I contacted and rejected. But I don't think that matters much, no one will know who is the best in mongolian basket weaving scholarship, they will look at my resume, google the name of the college and into the trash it goes.

Don't know why I'm keep going tbqh
