The KJV doesn't necessarily have the most aesthetic accomplishment
Rather, the KJV has heavily influenced culture from when it was the best available translation

For example Matthew 22:21
NIV: "Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "So give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."
KJV: They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

The NIV is much more clear and concise than the KJV
Which reads better is debatable
But the KJV is undoubtedly the more iconic because "Render unto Caesar" is so recognizable.

>that Egil's Saga cover

I've only ever read Egil's saga and Independant People, but the chart looks bretty gud nonetheless. That Powers of Darkness looks pretty cool. I'll get around to Njal's Saga sooner rather than later, my understanding is its the "best" of the sagas

>> No.10698467

>>10698410
that Egils Saga cover is the edition used in most Icelandic high schools
of the sagas the three "big" ones so to speak are Egils Saga, Saga of Burnt Njáll and Laxdæla Saga
it's hotly debated which one of those is the best one, my pick is indeed Njál's Saga
Egils Saga is probably the most epic one, Njál's Saga the most poetic one and Laxdæla the most romantic and dramatic one
other popular one include the Saga of Gunnlaugr Worm Tongue, Saga of Grettir the Strong, Saga of the Confederates, Saga of Gísli Súrsson, Hrafnkel's Saga and more
if we step outside the sagas of the Icelanders genre other popular sagas include Saga of Hervör and Heiðrekr, Saga of the Sturlungs and Saga of the Volsungs and more

Powers of Darkness is actually very interesting, it's a "translation" of Dracula that was serialized in some Icelandic magazine in 1901 but changes the story significantly and there's reason to believe those changes were actually made with the knowledge and help of Stoker himself although it's not clear exactly if that was the case
I hesitated to include it because it's not exactly Icelandic but it's interesting enough and was just rediscovered a few years ago that I decided to
also because most of the other authors I was considering haven't really been translated

Everything below Laxness on that list is complete garbage (excluding Þórbergur). And this list urgently needs Grettis saga, Sturlunga saga and Heimskringla.

Also some good ones:
Þjóðsögur Jóns Árnasonar
Piltur og stúlka by Jón Thoroddsen
Svartar fjaðrir by Davíð Stefánsson
Tíminn og vatnið by Steinn Steinarr
