He's basically saying that Reddit and in general internet socialist are fucking retards (to put it lightly) because their "socialism" is entirely devoid of any real world responsibility and instead it's just another dumb label they put on themselves without never having a serious engagement with the ideas of their supposed ideology. But it's more than that, he's characterizing the entire realm of contemporary politics in pop and internet culture as nothing more than mere fashion. He says that the Left can't win the meme war because actually being a leftist, a socialist in this case, requires a full-on serious commitment, it requires being radical, and memes are the opposite of that. If you call yourself a leftist and all you do is shitpost on le epic twitter about the fotm Id-pol issue or about "socialist videogames" or "lefty memes" you're a fucking retard because your "socialism" is nothing more than a fashion choice, and memes are the characteristic product of this culture, hyper-thoughts used to signal your political (again, fashion) choices that don't imply any real world commitment to your ideas and in fact they imply the opposite.

Very interesting post and he's quite Zizekian in his analysis. (when Ziziek talks of a new wave of "muh irony and clicktivism detached false-left-social consciousness)"

One thing I will add; having been in and seen some really fucked up situations in the third world to which the poster oft-refers that are a world away from the leftist twats he is rightfully criticizing, there is immense humour among the very people who are in dire situations

Take a slum-dweller; they aren't "muh serious," all the time; they live as humans in the most appalling conditions and you'll find they have their own memes and social jokes that mock their own situation. They are for more socially conscious and humurous than the very leftists that seek to silence any and all humour with the slum-dweller as the subject..

because that's where the beauty of good prose is. the meaning of the words is one thing but their sound is another, and if you read just for meaning and ignore the sound you lose half the content of the writing. not subvocalising is a second rate way to read good prose, like looking at black and white reproductions of a painting - you might understand the subject but you've lost the rhythm of the writing.

I'll admit that with average prose or with translations this doesn't matter as much, on the other hand if you really want to understand a poem you absolutely have to read it aloud. same for the KJV, which was written specifically to be read aloud and doesn't have anything close to its full impact when read silently.

Still getting through it.
It rejects more far-left marxism and communism in favour of democratic socialism but not the pussyfied kind.
A very good argument for standing up to power in the political and economic arena through a most simple philsophy; Stop being greedy smug pricks and help men evolve and progress and stop making excuses and help create a better world in pragmatic terms not merely intellectual masturbation and onanist theorizing

Nye Bevan is probably one of the most influential and legendary Socialists that has ever lived;
From a mining family and village and with a stutter (He became friends with the King later featured in the "King's Speech," should really be about Bevan but he's not upper-class enough!)
He literally talked the talk and walked the walk showing that one man with the support of many can do great things with sheer will
He built and fought for the NHS, built housing, schools, hospitals and built the social security system etc

If that is the case i wish you well and if i could i would refund you any money for that purchase if you found it to be trash and below your expectations.
It's simple, to the point, biographical and just to me speaks so much sense

>IN MANY, WAYS it would have been better for a book of this sort to have been written by a person detached from day-to-day preoccupation with political affairs. Yet, as I come to write, I begin to see that there are advantages possessed by a political practitioner like myself that are denied to anyone living a more cloistered life; for in the pattern of my own activities has been woven the main strands of the political epoch which began with the end of the great war of 1914-1918.

>I started my political life with no clearly formed personal ambition as to what I wanted to be, or where I wanted to go. I leave that nonsense to the writers of romantic biographies. A young miner in a South Wales colliery, my concern was with the one practical question:
>Where does power lie in this particular State of Great Britain, and how can it be attained by the workers?
>No doubt this is the same question as the one to which the savants of political theory are fond of addressing themselves, but there is a world of difference in the way it shaped itself for young workers like myself.
>It was no abstract question for us.
>The circumstances of our lives made it a burning, luminous mark of interrogation.
>Where was power and which the road to it?

>It will be seen at once that the question formulated itself in different fashion for us than it would have done in a new, pioneering society or in the mind of someone equipped by a long formal education. In such cases the question shapes itself in some such fashion . . .

Stay sharp lad.

Absolutey astute in how memes intrinsically create a separation from subject, enabling the evasion of responsibility.

However, it is also true that irony, a mocking detachment from one's own positions, assumptions and prejudices, yes, even moral ones, is necessary - indeed not a barbarous but a necessary element of civilisaiton and self-reflectivity. In fact I would say that if one is always approaching the world from a context of "authentic relation", of reponsibility and overflowing seriousness without the possibility of relief, detachment, of an allowance for change in perspective, temporary or otherwise, one is liable to become brutal, an ideological abscess. Dangerous, malignant. Sick in the brain. Perilously spooked - common affliction of capital-L Leftists.

Both authenticity and irony can become means of evil relations to other human beings.

>Alice’s magic wand is made of pine, and it has a phoenix feather in its core. The 17-year-old Italian knows this because she uses Pottermore, a website where Harry Potter fans take quizzes to find out what life would be like if they lived in the wizarding world. On Twitter, she spends two hours a day updating her profile with clips, quotations and pictures from the books and films. But while Alice loves everything about Harry Potter (she has read each of the seven books 14 times), she does not like JK Rowling.

This is existential horror on the level of Ivan Ilyich.

If you're implying I hate 4chan, you are very wrong. This place may be 90%+ complete garbage and ignorant shitposting, but even that is redeemed to a degree by its authenticity. As for the rest of it, that golden minority, I have seen information, passion, humor, and true insight on a level I rarely see from other human beings IRL. I'm not going to throw in my personal life details, because I don't want the "lying on the Internet" retort, but I'm not a social pariah by any means. And I would say, in the tangent of college education, that 4chan has done as much or more to enrich me than most of my college professors.

From /fit/ and /lit/ and /his/ and /ck/ and /pol/, I have heard the opinions, minority as they may be, of people who have actually driven me to better myself and inculcated a desire to look honestly at life and see what matters. A lot of that is my own nature, but this place has been a useful influence. If you can wade through the shit and find the gold, 4chan will edify you rather than corrupt you.

Just kidding.

Having sex is literally the most basic, desperate, tragic, hopelessly-void-of-meaning, outrageously obnoxious, troublesome, costly, and downright pointless cry for help that the universe has ever screamed. Wow, you were born as an objectively good looking, decent looking, or perhaps borderline acceptable member of your species. WOW! INCREDIBLE! You managed to procure a willing (which in evolutionary terms, willing translates roughly to "fucking desperate for at least a few reasons") mate and managed to somehow perform the act of intercourse with her! WOW! This his literally only been taking place for HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF FUCKING YEARS! WOW! Except guess what, you probably wore a condom... which means you failed at submitting yourself to an act which means absolutely nothing. The only thing left to do now is kill yourself.

Leftists will not win at memes because some things they are unwilling to mock so their memes are always stale and boring.

He then goes onto explain that this it is good that leftists don't mock somethings and that leftists should abandon memes because it is bourgoisie for some reason.

>If the postmodern ironic subject was actually susceptible to the conditions of life faced by the grand majority of people in the world, if their mothers were sod into sexual slavery, and abused just to support them, if they had to work long hours as children, if they were immersed in the hell that was the wars of the Congo, if they lived as the average Indian slum-dweller did, they would not be so keen on finding the world so funny, now would they.

I was a young under age b8 when I first came to 4chan years ago, right before the dawn of the fappening, /pol/s cuckening, and gamergate.

By God I was completely in love with this site, everything about it screamed brilliance. And I watched the years roll by and I grew up on this site and witnessed everything this post had. And even now I know in my heart, that those early days of 4chan years and years ago were significantly better.

I remember when /b/ was one the craziest places on the internet for me, and now its just a porn dump.

I miss how this place used to be.

The Allatians believe that they have a writing system superior to all others. Unlike books written in alphabets, syllabaries, or logograms, an Allatian book captures not only words, but also the writer’s tone, voice, inflection, emphasis, intonation, rhythm. It is simultaneously a score and a recording. A speech sounds like a speech, a lament a lament, and a story re-creates perfectly the teller’s breathless excitement. For the Allatians, reading is literally hearing the voice of the past.

But there is a cost to the beauty of the Allatian book. Because the act of reading requires physical contact with the soft, malleable surface, each time a text is read, it is also damaged and some aspects of the original irretrievably lost. Copies made of more durable materials inevitably fail to capture all the subtleties of the writer’s voice, and are thus shunned.

In order to preserve their literary heritage, the Allatians have to lock away their most precious manuscripts in forbidding libraries where few are granted access. Ironically, the most important and beautiful works of Allatian writers are rarely read, but are known only through interpretations made by scribes who attempt to reconstruct the original in new books after hearing the source read at special ceremonies.

I am a spoiled brat whose parents shelled out $50,000 to put me through an English degree. College was a joke. I never heard of anybody failing. I applied myself to my studies but it didn't matter one way or another. By my final year I began to notice the professors getting bored as I did, and I realized all along lectures have been full of THEIR cut corners, full of THEIR glances at the clock. Professors are not noble intellectuals but grown up bourgeois children. Lessons are reduced to memorizable bullet points. We learn the functions of an equation without understanding its inner workings. College is exactly the false learning Kierkeegard spoke of. There is no societal progress in learning. Taking bullet points on the canon and reducing everything to the hashing out of dialectics teaches you nothing but how to attend College.

I have not had a day of hard work in my life. I am not rich enough to be a credit card hedonist but bourgoise enough to be completely soulless and indifferent to everything. The bourgoise hate me for wasting my potential, the proles hate me for being a smug pampered bourgoise. I am a superfluous man. I have no dignity at all.

You should know that the professors who go through the motions like that are now incentivized to do so. They are paid on salary and if they have tenure there's no reason for them to be stellar teachers. Their livelihood is in their research and publications. Teaching is secondary and compulsory.

I went to an elite uni that had one of the youngest tenured professors in the world. She had to teach a survey introductory course and she was VERY clearly pissed off about it and doing it begrudgingly. At first I thought she was a disgrace but now I think she was just being aboveboard about the whole thing. She recognized how utterly pointless it is to project a humongous powerpoint and condense 500 years of intense philosophical development into a few months of surface-level learning. She was just vocalizing what everyone already knew.

I know this doesn't help you and doesn't really solve your conflict but I just wanted to chime in and say you're not alone. I'm doing a master's degree in the humanities right now on my parents' dime and I feel like a pathetic rodent every day. My only hope is I can somehow pay them back one day. I intend to pursue a career close to my family so I can be there for them when they need me later in life. I don't believe I will be a revolutionary, nor will I synthesize some grand hitherto unknown branch of knowledge. So my ambitions are getting humbler.

oldfag here. I'll try to explain from my own perception.

I think the main difference (which >>10692811 gives a sound explanation for the reasons, imo) is the insane increase in % of a certain amount of people in the last few years. The "/pol/" type. The "yay 4chan is a place to say nigger without being called out" type, let's call them reddit ppl.

So, for me /lit/ was always a place where people talk about literature/philsophy speaking their minds (or even shitpost speaking their minds, whatever). I think the main reason that people ended up here was because of that. Some "concrete" examples and how the influx of /pol/ ppl changes that:

- You can actually criticize a well regarded work without a bunch of people being afraid of agreeing with it because "muh, what they are gonna think of me" and actually have good discussions about it.
^ reddit ppl are usually just like "gtfo pleb" "lmao" "nigger" or posting the kind of thing above just as "moby dick is shit" without actual discussion

- You can express opinions that you are unsure of and wouldn't express otherwise if it wasn't anon because you are afraid of your "lit cred" among people you know. This also leads to different and interesting kinds of discussions
^ reddit ppl are gonna usually just (you) with memes or do that kind of thing in a "sky is green" way, without any thought

- You can express controversial opinions the same way, leads to good discussions the same wal
^reddit ppl express this kind of stuff just for the sake of edginess and because "here they can" all the time

- You can get pretty good recommendations about everything because of the kind of people this attracts (people who wanna have serious discussions instead of the common sense parroting that you have everywhere else because people are more worried about "cred" than actual discussions. this kind of people tend to know more actual good stuff, specially stuff less famous elsewhere).
^ reddit ppl tend just meme ad nauseam and be edgy when it comes to that

I could go on and on and on, but you get the point. Pretty much any "this is good about /lit/" is worsened by the reddit effect. This used to be a place who used to attract people who are fed up with the common sense parrots, hipster pseuds and "my YA is as good as your literary fiction" type of people and pretty much only that. But now we have reddit as well (the really bad part of reddit).

Did we have shitposting? Yeah. Did we have memeing and >start with the greeks all the way in recommendation threads? Sure. Way less though and they were funny.
I think it's still a good place. We still have the same good and the same bad things. The problem is that we have way less of the good and way more of the bad. And when you have too much of the bad it sorta of stop being funny and becomes annoying. Actual humor here used to be way more funny and original as well, the % of repetition of "edgy fun" has increased a lot as well.

As an example, one thing that I have seem that changed A LOT are policital discussions. Imo this board used to be pretty 50-50 left/right wing (or at least both were well represented). I lean pretty heavily to the left, but this was a place that when right wing people talked (all the time tbqh) it would be with actual "good" arguments. And it would generate good discussions. Like, even political opinions that are near absurd for me would sometimes be said here (and rebuted as well) with something that at least resembled good reasoning.

I usually hate political discussions elsewhere, because it's just a big circlejerk where people just reinforce the shallow opinions of anyone that thinks like them, or just "hahaha you're dumb" "hahaha look at this" people who think differently. Here people would say things that completely oppose my views in a way less shallow and more reasoned way and make me actually think about stuff. Or refute my arguments with something that actually makes sense (the same way I would try to do to theirs).
Reddit ppl tend to just meme edgy right wing stuff forever and that's it. Or parrot the same stuff over and over. It's pretty much facebook political discussion with some extra edge added.

This actually used to be one of the few boards where you would be called out for super edgy and unjustified racism or misogyny tbqh. Now the norm is pretty much to do that in meme form. /pol/ is pretty much memes you can't post elsewhere. Political discussion here has to a great extent become that as well.

BIG FUCKING SURPRISE the cancer that ate /lit/ can only speak in the language of upvote or downvote.

4chan is still an amazing site, and i have no doubt a lot of what you say is true (I have similar rose-tinted nostalgia for POE-News and IRC channels). when the brainlets move on to the next thing hopefully we can get back to a free and anonymous site of quality. there really is no substitute for 4chan. no registration, no minimum or maximum post length, a completely free and anonymous exchange.

i've noticed some threads on /lit/ especially are so arcane that nobody posts in them. OP or someone will start a discussion and it dies for lack of ability in the readers.

I've browsed this board since 2010 and it's about the same as it always was. Maybe a little bit better because there is a certain degree of self-awareness and elitism that's expected of posters, unlike the earliest days when you had people making South Park references, trollface posts, and Douglas Adams threads

There are many leftists ITT who are resentful about being purged by their ideological equivalents from /pol/. Now that is different. Marxists used to be a lot more common here and much more comfortable sharing off-topic leftist viewpoints in attempts at on-topic threads, but they've since been pushed to leftypol and the backwaters of /his/. Some still hang around and poke their heads up occasionally, and they make their whiny voices heard in meta threads like these.

Anyways, they are doing their best to craft this narrative that the days of Brownbear and I'm a huge Orson Welles were some sort of Enlightenment-era French salon where people regularly discussed the complexities of Kant and didn't scoff at black literature. Then, the story goes, pol ruined everything and forced everybody to roll their eyes at Zora Neale Hurston and watch Jordan Peterson interviews with Joe Rogan.

This is just not true. Don't believe me? Check the archive.
