Tell me, Wattpad, what's the purpose of posting writing there? Do you just want an audience?

I'm not judging you, I just also have thought of posting there, but I'm not sure why.

I just need to post my shit somewhere. Building an audience would be a nice bonus.

Writing for yourself only to read eventually gets boring. I want to see how the plebs react to my stuff.

this

but fwiw, i post some of my stories online too and i get far more interaction from deviantart by submitting it to groups over there

also you don't have to pick a cover, which always felt just a bit awkward to me

Okay, yeah, that's what I was feeling as well. I just couldn't find the words for it, thank you.
>I want to see how the plebs react to my stuff.
I was also thinking this, but a lot quieter.

Are you serious my man? Isn't that place for pictures-only and even so, is it still worth it?

Some people told me Tumbrl is good to post the stuff you write, but I never tried it

i'm serious. i share my stuff with some random writing groups, and i end up with more views and comments than i ever did with wattpad. it did take like two years of throwing my stuff around to see real results.

to be honest, i think it's more about luck than anything, that any significant amount of people will stumble upon your work. i genuinely do enjoy deviantart as a website more. there's some very dedicated people on there, and they put some real effort into reading and providing feedback. i ended up making some friends, and still chat with them infrequently. i never talked into much depth with anyone from wattpad. but again, that's more of a luck thing, i think. you could meet people anywhere.

or just about.. i haven't tried tumblr myself, but a friend who has says it's very bad for sharing art. the tumblr viewing experience is designed to be so streamlined that people hardly ever interact with anything on their dashboard beyond dropping a like, then continuing to scroll down. apparently it's rare to see people say anything at all, much less serious critique

again, that's just what i heard from a friend. i'm comfortable enough with my modest deviantart and wattpad "audiences" that i never bothered to branch out

Alright anon, thanks for sharing it with us, I really appreciate it

Just a sidenote I need to ask, did it really take 2 years posting so people started interacting with your work? But did you post like weekly in those 2 years, or it just happened a story you posted got more attention than others or something? Was it a burst of attention or was it gradual? this confused me a little bit so if you could explain it I would be really grateful

it really did take two years or so to reach numbers that let me know i wasn't just wasting my time by uploading it. i post pretty frequently, at worst once every four weeks and at best once a week, whether it's a 1k-20k short story or poetry.

the attention was gradual, i remember the first day i joined, i just dumped like 5 of my favorite stories that i'd already written, and i got some decent feedback immediately. a few comments, "faves" etc.

but as time went on, there'd be whole months when i wouldn't really see much interaction, and i'd spend a lot of time writing a story to not really get anything out of it. you also might have a work you really think is one of your best, while something you almost feel ashamed to attach your name to is what gets all the praise. so the best advice i can give you is to stay consistent, and value your pride in your own work above everything else, because there could very well be long stretches of time where you're the only person cheering you on.

but i kept chugging along, and when i started to submit things to groups, that really helped. there's people in some of these groups that almost seem like they feel contractually obligated to respond to everything sent their way. mostly the "founders" and "contributors" who are probably just making sure people aren't just adding crappy work to their group.

if you write genre fiction, that's a big help. i never really write that sort of thing, but i once got a foreign influence out of nowhere, and wrote a 90k sci-fi tale. i took the first chapter to the biggest sci-fi groups around, and that's still the most popular thing i have. it gave me a small burst, at least until the majority of those readers realized that was the only sci-fi story i had.

some groups also have contests, and that can help spread your name. and the crown trophy of deviantart, a "daily deviation" is an honor that the admins give to a piece of art they stumble across and like enough to share on the front page for a little while. i've never gotten it myself, but the friend i mentioned before has one. that little piece of flash fiction has about half the views of the rest of his gallery, so it's a big deal in terms of getting your work seen.

but like i said, it's mostly luck, and i doubt any site is really any better overall than the others.. try uploading across multiple platforms at first, then go with where your audience happens to grow. good luck, it's awesome that you're ready to start putting yourself out there
