they didn't, they built up a collection of formulas that allowed them to semi-improvise a slightly different illiad every time they performed it. so the more appropriate question would be whose style do you wish to have burned into your head so that if someone says something like "red riding hood but pynchon wrote it" you'd be able to just produce it out of thin air.
