1984 was already outdated when it was written.

Writing in 1949, Orwell basically describes the Soviet Russia of the 20s and 30s.

If we rehash 1984 yet again, the story risks being a hundred years out of date rather than simply 20 years out of date.

The future looks grim, but it won't be the sort of Soviet grimness of the last century. Decentralizing technologies will see to that.
