That’s because it wasn’t one man. You’re reading Euclid like I, or anyone else on this board has read him, once in a while every now and then. Trust me when I say, you will not be disappointed with how it affects your life. Yeah. Your life.

I find that if I read a geometrical proposition before the day I can think about it all day, and come back to it in my own brain while talking to others, or at work. I ruminate over it and it actually improves my logical capacities. One or two propositions a day will do ya.

But yeah it wasn’t one man. It was primarily Pythagoras, Eudoxus, and Euclid, among others actually. Still, the Elements remains one of the most impressive feats of mankind to date, and you are a logical warrior for sitting through that.

From there you could go on to harder logic or linguistics, or more mathematical propositions. It sets you up for anything. If you were interested in mathematical history you could even continue reading ancient mathematicians. What piques your fancy? Is it Books one and two, or the arithmetical work of Book V? If it’s the former you could delve into Archimedes a bit who loved I.47 so much he invented calculus with it, or Apollonius who adores props II. 4,5,6,7, among others and uses them to prove the Harmonic ratio. If it’s the latter, then Nicomachus is your sure bet, who only deals with numbers.

Last but not least read this carefully: I, and everyone else who has read The Elements knows it is hard, but it changes you into someone capable of rigorous philosophical logic. You can wield reductio ad absurdum with ease. You find the superposition arguments of other geometers similar to those of Euclid. You see a proposition for what it really is: a collection of axioms and propositions proved with other axioms that are as least demanding as possible helping to discover a system which was waiting to be discovered. Like any great philosophical truths.

the storm before the storm is a fucking stupid name for a book
i mean the storm before the storm IS ALSO A STORM
how are you supposed to distinguish one storm from another. especially if the second storm starts as soon as the first storm ends
the book should really be called ONE BIG FUCKING STORM

i guess it would be ok if they were different kinds of storm or something. like a thunderstorm followed by a snowstorm. but if that happens you've got major meteorological shit going on, that's no time to be reading a book

Part of what's frustrating about it is that it's a singular, well-defined work which is a breezy read (despite its delightfully oppressive architecture, looking at those harsh panels of angular buildings and various geometric forms is the real joy of the work) and is of course much more interesting than the condensed movie. I have a really hard time with the idea that you got to the /halfway point/ at the end of v.3 (which is where the apocalypse actually happens in the manga), and weren't curious enough to do the back half. Just writing this makes me want to re-read it. In fact I'll do a little reflection on the volumes while I'm on the subject, they're books after all.

1 - exposition and setup, this tracks fairly well with the movie. Art style is a bit crude at this point.
2 - Tetsuo branching out. The main imagery that I remember is the elevator platform on the 45 degree incline, lots of action around this point (the film nods to this set piece as well).
3 - IIRC the slimmest volume. Simply put - the apocalypse that everyone had feared actually takes place.
4 - The various weirdos take over the landscape; classic post-apocalyptic theme which is reiterated in this classic instance of the postapocalyptic genre. Tetsuo flexes some power. One is reminded of Flagg in The Stand (I've only seen the miniseries), Escape from New York etc.
5 - I actually don't remember this one as well. I wanna say the SOL laser is introduced here but I might be way off base, it's been a while.
6 - the rebels hold Neo-Tokyo, riding off into the sunset.

I have 3 large bookshelves full of books. A large assortment of stuff, but I recently had a realization that my collection is so utterly lacking direction I became embarrassed. So I have started to purge books. Books I'll never read, books I read and hated, books I'll never read again, etc.

I want to reconstitute my shelf so there are clear points of focus. e.g. This is the part of my shelf that contains all the books I read when I got interested in roman history. Here is the other part when I got heavily interested in Jung, or Nietzsche. Here is a shelf of 19th century Russian literature. Etc. etc.

It’s lovely form-wise; content-wise it’s very good, too. Seeing the original type specimens is a treat and far more interesting than if the faces were just printed. There is a fair amount of history for each typeface but if you want something more substantial there are better, more specific texts on particular typefaces/designers, and if you are after something more technical then this isn’t really a match.

I did not know that. Thanks, Anon. Will get the latest issue next time I’m in London.

So do you guys just resell/refund books you didn't like? How many times do you read the books on your shelf that you permanently own? Or is amassing a collection just eye-candy for books you read once and want to show off that you read them?

Just like >>10624862 said, it is a very good book and in my pipe dreams it should be read by students starting in school, i.e. middle/high school/whatever nomenclature you use in your country. The teacher at least should read this book and try to integrate it into his classes.
