You can make an argument that popular authors like Philip K. Dick are at least doing some justice of continuing the traditions of Mary Shelley and Jules Verne.

I'm not sure if there is a genre romance author alive today who can claim to be doing any sort of justice to Jane Austen.

Probably just the female equivalent of comic books.
Not that there aren't feminine comic books or masculine? Romance novels. They're just equal in terms of quality mostly.

The honest answer: There is some solid romance out there. Jane Austen is remembered over her male peers for a reason. Emotionally driven stuff also doesn't age as badly as other topics. At best it's high art, at worst it's just as bad as brainless action flicks and adventure novels, but we harp on it more, because our society has a deeply rooted distrust for everything feminine.

The /lit/ answer: Womenz is dumb, can the even read? hue hue

Its not so much a genre unless it has fabio on the cover. Also it depends on the book.
