Ok, so what parts were 'delirium' and what parts are real? The murders never really happened right?

Clearly a joke, though you could call it a spoiler if it's meant to be Dunya

Of course it happened.

If it existed in Raskolnikov's mind, he'd never be able to break out of the delusion that he's a Napoleon rather than an ordinary man.

Daily reminder that the entire plot of Crime and Punishment only happened in Dostoyevsky's mind

Extending the question a bit here, what characters were figments of his imagination?

Zossimov obviously and Sonia anyone else?

Where did you get this dumbass theory?
Are you confusing this book with American Psycho?

How was Zossimov not real?

>> No.10550498

>>10550483
No one in the book acknowledges him apart from Raskolnikov, also he is absent whenever Raskolnikov is no longer 'feverish'

>> No.10550533

>>10550498
Here's a thinker: He is the only that actually exists and the fever delirium makes Raskolnikaf imagine his surrounding and his well-being.

He talks to Razumikhin and raskolnikov's mom

Both those characters interact with other characters though. Even when raskolnikov isn't around.

>> No.10550555

This is a common misunderstanding, we, the readers, never actually 'see' them interacting with other characters.
All information we get is either hearsay or imagined

>>10550555
But we do.

Pyotr Petrovich seeks out Zossimov's approval when he first clashes with Razumikhin.

Zossimov, Nastasya and Razumikhin all discuss the murder when Raskolnikov is unconscious.

>> No.10550585

>>10550555
That wouldn't add anything to the story though.
It wouldn't fit with the rest of Dostoevsky's works either.

Also, razumikhin brings zossimov to raskolnikovs mom from the party when raskolnikov was delirious on his couch. Bringing the doctor directly to here was the only way she would leave raskolnikovs apartment.

Think of it this way, if Raskolinikov (who the author stresses consistently is not of a stable mental state) was perfectly conscious throughout the novel, would certain characters cease to exist?

The answer must be yes because these 'characters' are part of the lower band of humans described in his thesis while he exists in the same strata as Napoleon.
