Dostoevsky, Nietzsche and Freud? Hmm, Okay... Wait. The Gulag Archipelago AND Solzhenitsyn?? Jesus Christ, is it possible to fanboy Jordan Peterson even harder?

And then Foucault? Haha. What happened there? Did you get that before you adopted Peterson's ideology? Part of the Peterson idolization says you have to despise and reject Foucault and Derrida without reading them. M8, i'll admit he sold me on Solzhenitsyn and those TBR horizontal books on the second shelf, but I've had an amateur interest in Freud and psychoanalysis for the past year or so without being inspired by JP. I see. I've heard Marquez is a meme here, but it was recommended to me by someone, so I decided to buy it. Haven't read it yet.

Keynes I bought while studying economics. I'm not a supporter of Keynesian economics, but it's still an interesting read.

Paradise Lost I bought when I was a teenager and felt the need to show everyone how smart and cultured I was.

Satanic Verses was a birthday present from a friend who fled Iran when he was younger. Really enjoyed this book, but I can see why Rushdie would be considered a meme, or at least that one book.

I have to say though, I was expecting some other books to be called out, mainly War and Peace, Pale Fire, Moby-Dick, Art of War etc.

I'll give you a tl:dr : Brazil, like most New World countries, had to live (arguably it still does) with an identity crisis, torn between being white, black and native. Things got a lot more complicated with the immigration trends during the end of the XIX and beginning of the XX century. Now Brazil had to deal with new elements such as the Lebanese, Jews, Chinese, Japanese etc. In the book, the author, a historian, analyzes how such groups and the mainstream, "white" Brazilian society ended up engendering a multicultural country. One of the most interesting points is how most of these groups were initially reviled but ended up being called "whiter than the Portuguese" (especially Jews and the Japanese).
The author is American, so you can find the book in English if you're actually interested.

And I don't really mind having "meme books". From what I can tell it usually just means that it's popular at the moment, and things are usually popular for a reason...

You are aware not everyone cares about esoteric shit, for the pure sake of "trying something new", especially given both a) how long it takes to read a book, and b) how short a human's life is, if you plan on living it at all outside of one's study.

They're called classics for a reason, and that's because they've been decreed diamonds in the rough. Not everyone cares about or has the time for rhinestones. Maybe you'll do us all a favour and waste your life reading through hundreds of first-time author's novels to ascertain which if any at all are of preservable value, but the person who owns these books is guaranteed to have never wasted their time at all, and they're infinitely better off because of that.
