A bit inspired by the Shakespeare and Company thread earlier - what are your favorite bookstores, and why?

Pic related - it's Anil Book Corner in New Delhi, probably the best book to square feet ratio of any store I've been to.

>> No.1050673

I buy everything online.

http://www.thebookdepository.co.uk <- my favourite. Worldwide free shipping and actually very, very low prices. If I want to find a (new) book for the cheapest it is usually there.

You've just given me one less reason to ever have to leave to The Basement of Solitude.

Thank you, kind stranger.

I love Half-Price Books here in Texas. If you can't figure out why based on their name, it's time to read more and work on that comprehension problem.
I wish they gave you more for the books, though, I took a hundred books there once and got only 8 dollars.

there's a small used bookstore around the corner from my in philadelphia. it's called something like book world. it's a little overpriced for a bookstore, the average being around $7, but the selection is very good, it's quiet, and it's local.

Protip: take relatively good care of your books and return them there. I usually get a good 20 bucks for a garbage-sack full.

Favourite offline - either Uncle Peter's Books in Lismore, or Thinkers' Bookshop at Tweed Heads. Ausfag here.

Favourite online - Leura books is pretty nice. 6.50 domestic shipping covers as many books as you want, and they apply a 20% discount if you use their website (not abebooks). There's also bookdepository of course.

Most hated bookshop - Archives in Brisbane. They have at least a million used books under their roof and all of it is way overpriced. Also they stick their old penguins/pelicans under the front counter so you have to get on your knees in the narrow entrance and be a nuisance. If I was inclined to steal, I would.

favorite is Camelot Books in Orange County because their prices rock and their shelves are nicely organized. Barnes & Noble and Borders, most locations.

Make fun of them, but there is a reason they are successful

Give me a great environment which encourages me to read for free and I will spend money, lots and lots of money.

Give me tables of useless and heavily discounted picture books and I will happily buy them as gifts.

Yes formulaic, yes generic, but they are brilliant.

wish I would've known about that place when I was there the other week. I went to Robin's book store which, last time I was there, seemed like they were going to close up shop soon. It was an alright selection though. Got some Paul Bowles and Michaux.

There's a place in Baltimore called Normals that I really dig. I spent like 200 bucks there once on a big stack of books cause they had a good deal of surrealists

Favorite bookstores in Philly:
House of Our Own (3920 Spruce Street)
— Gorgeous inside, lots and lots of books, and a killer selection.

Book Corner (311 N. 20th Street)
— Great selection, always in good condition, as it's old library books. Money goes to support the Free Library of Philadelphia

The Last Word (220 S. 40th Street)
— Great selection, well lit, adorable bookstore cat. What more do you need?

I'm also a sucker for Strand, in NYC but who isn't?

>> No.1053255

Never been to a really awesome bookstore =/ I like Borders and B&N just cause they are everywhere and have a good selection. Books and Books is the Miami chain bookstore which has a nice feel to it, and they stock more "artsy, indie" books. and then the thrift stores always have a books/movies/records wall which is nice cuz the books are usually 50 cents.

and DC has nothing that I know of -_- every few months a used book store pops up in abandon buildings. it's really random, but pretty kool.

and I fucking want to go to Powells so bad. sososososo bad. I heard from like 24923957 different people how amazing it is.

Do try making the trip to Brand in Glendale. Great selection and very affordable. They're having a Labor Day sale soon. I believe it starts next week.

Bookfellows is pricy, but their books are very clean and in excellent shape. They tend to cater to the sci-fi crowd, if you're into that sort of thing (I'm not). Ray Bradbury goes there often.

Vroman's has a better selection than any Borders or B & N you'll ever visit. But their staff can be pretty fucking awful. Bunch of pompous and pretentious art students who circle jerk over Hugo Chavez and Chuck Palahniuk. I took pictures of their in-store reviews. Fucking awful. We should make a thread devoted to those things sometime.

Just "the employees are assholes" and "The Strand is BIG AND EVIL" (as in, they pay crap for books, pay crap to people who work there, and use their size and market position to put the hurt on other stores and on occasional publishers).

Figures that a shop that's so popular that it's almost a cliche to mentioned has its share of haters, really. I've never experienced anything other than a good time there, myself.

Dude, it's New York. Of *course* the employees are assholes. It just comes with the territory.

I've never tried to sell anything there. If I was going to, I'd go to Book Corner in Philly to make sure the money went somewhere good.
