Is it necessary to read Ulysses first if you want a full appreciation of postmodern literature?

>> No.10503842

Ulysses is modern.
Finnegan's Wake is postmodern.
Neither are essential for understanding.

Ulysses is pomo, stupid. Don't parrot. Read it and see for yourself.

there's no way I'm going to attempt to jump into post-structuralist philosophy without having read the hundreds of years that came before it. I'll get there eventually though!

Is anyone else scared to read Ulysses? I'm approaching 30 and I still haven't read it.

I'd advise you to tackle it early, because you need to read it more than once. I read it at 25, then again 5 years later. The second time was the payoff ... I appreciated it twice as much as before. I plan to read it again before long.

Besides, if you don't get Ulysses under your belt soon, how will you get to Finnegans Wake?

It isn't that big of a deal outside of Sirens.

>Grossbooted draymen rolled barrels dullthudding out of Prince's stores and bumped them up on the brewery float.
One of my favourite sentences in Ulysses.
