Compare:

Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story
of that man skilled in all ways of contending,
the wanderer, harried for years on end,
after he plundered the stronghold
on the proud height of Troy.
He saw the townlands
and learned the minds of many distant men,
and weathered many bitter nights and days
in his deep heart at sea, while he fought only
to save his life, to bring his shipmates home.
But not by will nor valor could he save them,
for their own recklessness destroyed them all —
children and fools, they killed and feasted on
the cattle of Lord Hęlios, the Sun,
and he who moves all day through the heaven
took from their eyes the dawn of their return. . . .
-Fitzgerald

Tell me about a complicated man.
Muse, tell me how he wandered and was lost
when he had wrecked the holy town of Troy,
and where he went, and who he met, the pain
he suffered in the storms at sea, and how
he worked to save his life and bring his men
back home. He failed to keep them safe; poor fools;
they ate the Sun God's cattle, and the god
kept them from home. Now goddess, child of Zeus,
Tell the old story for our modern times.
Find the beginning
-Wilson

I like the attempt at actually translating into poetry(I think she used iambic pentameter, with the justification that it's the rhythm of English, as dactylic hexameter was for Ancient Greek), and the lines matching up is nice too. There was initially an option in the 4 votes section of the tiebreaker poll which read ”Culture of Critique(got 8 votes but doesn’t deserve a guaranteed place)” and there were several different anons criticising that in the last thread, and someone took time to move it to the 8 votes slot when I opened up the vote counts to being checked. “Though in many natural objects, whiteness refiningly enhances beauty, as if imparting some special virtue of its own, as in marbles, japonicas, and pearls; and though various nations have in some way recognised a certain royal pre-eminence in this hue; even the barbaric, grand old kings of Pegu placing the title "Lord of the White Elephants" above all their other magniloquent ascriptions of dominion; and the modern kings of Siam unfurling the same snow-white quadruped in the royal standard; and the Hanoverian flag bearing the one figure of a snow-white charger; and the great Austrian Empire, Caesarian, heir to overlording Rome, having for the imperial color the same imperial hue; and though this pre-eminence in it applies to the human race itself, giving the white man ideal mastership over every dusky tribe; and though, besides all this, whiteness has been even made significant of gladness, for among the Romans a white stone marked a joyful day; and though in other mortal sympathies and symbolizings, this same hue is made the emblem of many touching, noble things - the innocence of brides, the benignity of age; though among the Red Men of America the giving of the white belt of wampum was the deepest pledge of honor; though in many climes, whiteness typifies the majesty of Justice in the ermine of the Judge, and contributes to the daily state of kings and queens drawn by milk-white steeds; though even in the higher mysteries of the most august religions it has been made the symbol of the divine spotlessness and power; by the Persian fire worshippers, the white forked flame being held the holiest on the altar; and in the Greek mythologies, Great Jove himself made incarnate in a snow-white bull; and though to the noble Iroquois, the midwinter sacrifice of the sacred White Dog was by far the holiest festival of their theology, that spotless, faithful creature being held the purest envoy they could send to the Great Spirit with the annual tidings of their own fidelity; and though directly from the Latin word for white, all Christian priests derive the name of one part of their sacred vesture, the alb or tunic, worn beneath the cassock; and though among the holy pomps of the Romish faith, white is specially employed in the celebration of the Passion of our Lord; though in the Vision of St. John, white robes are given to the redeemed, and the four- and-twenty elders stand clothed in white before the great white throne, and the Holy One that sitteth there white like wool; yet for all these accumulated associations, with whatever is sweet, and honorable, and sublime, there yet lurks an elusive something in the innermost idea of this hue, which strikes more of panic to the soul than that redness which affrights in blood.”

Ironically this fake ones is among the best charts ive seen on lit since i first started coming here. Never fails to baffle me how you faggots ignore serious philosophy as great literature but at least you guys arent reading total pleb fiction. Shits pretty in line with the meta "good books" lists out there, tho obvs we all have our biases

It might be a good list but goes completely against the idea of /lit/'s 20XX Best Books Ever Written List, since the "better" list was compiled by some 7 guys on discord or whatever and not by a couple dozens of actual /lit/ users.
How are you too dense to understand something as simple as that???

>> No.10500336

>>10500315
Who cares about "muh actual /lit/ users". They don't even read the books they vote for. The representative books of the ideal /lit/ are what should be on the chart. Not the shitty excrement of the collective illiterate filth that /lit/ is today.

You are retarded.
SImply braindead retarded only surviving off of IV drops.
You are perhaps one of the faggots who possibly would ruin such a /lit/ users list which is why you cant see it being a possibilty.
Leave this board and kys to make sure you never come back.

I advise you do the same more often.

(first guy you responded to)

I'm not even /pol/. That place probably has more anti-/pol/ baiters and strongly pro-Israel Jews shilling "based Israel" than kids larping as Nazis.

FWIW, I'm right-wing too when it comes to politics. Yet I'm actually pretty centrist on economic matters. Non-American if that helps.

The author of CoC is a prof who has done his research, though. Whether or not his conclusions make some uncomfortable is another matter.

I have read a number of the books on the list, by way of reading /lit/. The majority probably haven't read near any of the books, but the reading portion of /lit/ definitely have. If you disagree you're probably just being overly-cynical.

Good luck anon. I don't know if anyone will believe me, although why would I lie about it. But I remember making the 2015 list more than two years ago. I also made a top 100 authors list which was pretty fun and isn't posted here that often it seems. I remember oversleeping once and being late for work since I worked so long on it one night.

>> No.10502573

Most of these charts get ruined due to the rating system. Instead of jacking off on whether Moby Dick or Ulysses is better, how about we make sure the last half of the chart isn't filler.

>> No.10502749

>>10502573
the last half is what is important. This isn't a best list, it's a list of books lit is interested in. The little bit of variety and obscurity in the bottom portion of the list is the exciting part.

I considered doing authors, but looking at how this has gone so far I decided to stick with best meme. I’m not sure who’ll do next years though, considering this one was started on the 30th of December.
