Who is the best translator of Nietzsche?

I've heard people praise Kaufmann. Basic Writings & The Portable Nietzsche (both collection of Nietzsche translated by Kaufmann) are "value buy".

Kaufmann is good but there's no doubt he sanitized Nietzsche a bit for American audiences to make him more palatable to the post-WW2 sensibility.

Of course to his credit he did actually understand Nietzsche, and that is a rarity in itself.

Oh jesus, not it is not. It's philistines like you trying so hard to understand a text that whichever explanation given that isn't exactly like the one you fathomed results in someone not understanding him. Nietzsche is fairly straightforward, most definitelty in relation to most other thinkers of his time and before. For real, people like you make academia unnecessarily tedious.

I like the Oscar Levy series of translations. Buy the complete works from the "Barnes and Noble Library of Essential Reading," it has translations from Ludovici, and Haussmann. Pretty good.

>> No.10481607

Nietzsche was a romantic, far from nihilistic.

You have to learn German in order to understand him in a complete manner.

I've always wondered how much philosophy is lost in translation. Wouldn't pure ideas be easier to translate than literature? Also, doesn't the germanic roots of english help at all?

Hollingdale for Zarathustra, Menken maybe for Anti-Christ (if you know you're reading somewhat through his lens), and Kaufmann for anything else. Kaufmann does do a lot of sanitizing Nietzsche, but >>10480807 got it right though:
he does clearly have a thorough, scholarly understanding of Nietzsche. In my opinion he also just is a good writer.
German isn't the hardest language though, so at some point you should probably get around to learning it if you really want to dive deep into Nietzsche, and philosophy in general.

I feel sorry for you.

Hollingdale, Clarke, Breazele, or Levy. Those are real scholars, OP.
