I propose a thread dedicated to the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books.

I just found out this fucking series was the most challenged series of books from 1990-1999 by libraries and is still in the top ten of challenged books.

Here is the reason it was banned from Marshall Universities Libraries in West Virgina and the years the bannings took place.

2009

Banned or challenged for occult/Satanism, religious viewpoint and violence.

2007

Banned for insensitivity, violence, being unsuited to age group, and occult/Satanism.

2001

Banned for violence, being unsuited to age group, and occult themes

I disagree with the book being banned for the stories, because they were pretty god damned tame (even if cannibalism and people being murdered painfully was a pretty frequent occurrence), but I do gotta say, Stephen Gammell's artwork is pretty fucking insane to be featured in the pages of a children's book.

That said, posting some of his artwork now.

There was not one mention of Satanism in any of the stories in those books.

What the fuck?

Also, contributing pics of some more fucked up art.

found the second or third book in the series just last month and realized how fucked up the artwork is. even as an adult it gives me the creeps. awesome stuff.

Stephen King's "IT" used to be a big banned book back in the eighties and nineties.

I take some amusement at the Pearl Clutcher Brigade going through all books looking for objectionable material with a highlighter, then getting to the orgy at the back of that one. They must have flipped.

These are Jesus freaks. Anything that has skeletons and ghosts and zombies and doesn't accept Our Lord Jesus Christ into their hearts = Satanists.

As a kid I loved putting this picture as the second slide of a power point presentation, just to scare people. I photocopied it right out of the book.

When I was little, my friends and I would sing that song incessantly. It was funny, in a morbid kind of way.
