You are right, even stories where the character is tortured. I cant help but feel that being aware you are living a narrative story would be awe inspiring.

There are people who don't read fiction that often
When they do, they want escapism, because they get enough of real life
many of them are smart people, consummate professionals, caretakers, busy-bodies
but they wanna kick back and enjoy some dumb fiction
others are more immersed in fiction, more often, and start to notice the flaws.
they might be less able to deal with real life than the other type of consumer mentioned above, and yet they will demand more realism from their fiction

a dislike of realism is indicative of noting other than a dislike of realism

to say otherwise is to be invoking intellectually lazy stereotypes, that is, to project onto reality the very unrealistic fictional tropes you take issue with: Supremely oblivious

>A dislike of realism
we all experience realism all day everyday, why would we want to experience it more in coded form? Why would we not want to experience something besides what we always experience all day everyday, in coded form (coded meaning, text)

Realism is a mode of writing one puts on, a stylistic turn which is intentionally muted. As a result it reads forced and even faker than fake. A story is more than the movements of bodies within a world.

If Tolstoy wrote anything other than love letters to a fictional, exceptional humanity I'd be inclined to agree.

Imagine actually thinking that "realism" means a certain singular mode of writing.
Imagine actually thinking that the works of people like Verga and Stendhal read "forced and even faker than fake".
