What does /lit/ think of VR tech? Do you think it has the potential to change your life at all?

Would you read ebooks with it if you could choose different atmospheric settings? Like sitting on a train or in a stagecoach?

An audiobook which shows 3d characters in a setting, acting out the dialogue would be amazing. It wouldn't work for every book, because after a certain point it becomes a movie. But with something like Plato it would be nice to be able to sit in Socrates' prison cell while he's talking. Although the 'genre' would inevitably be co-opted by pure entertainment fags, and any academic or literary worth it had would be gone. But a good use for it might be for learning languages. Imagine sitting in a French cafe with a bunch of chatbots that look like real people, and you learn words so that you can speak to them. It'd be like a pseudo-instant immersion, but even that would be limited based on the voice technology. Though chat bots seem developed enough to work properly, so that's not a concern.

Overall I'm pretty excited for VR to become cheaper, but I don't think it's going to become a big thing for another 25-30 years. It's too limited by its surroundings to reach its full potential.

VR will never catch on. It's failed over and over and over again, with full media support behind it. It's only ever "content producers" hyping it up. It has never had, and never will have, general appeal. Nobody likes it. The elite* would very much like us to (which is why they've literally invested billions into it). At the end of the day it's stupid and nobody likes it.

*read into this whatever you want

VR is stupid as shit. I don't want to wear a helmet and walk around to play a game. Movies might be okay but I literally don't even watch movies nor have I had a TV service in over 10 years.

There's already hundreds of millions watching movies in theaters and playing games at home, why do you think VR doesn't have the potential to catch on? It's really just the next evolutionary step in that chain of hyperreality entertainment.

The current headsets also work very nicely, computer tech just needs to get more powerful and software companies need to support it better. Which is of course very possible may not happen, but that won't necessarily be a cultural reason for its failure then like you seem to imply.

Your vision of the future is so pure and unadulterated that i feel, in myself, a sort of calm hope brewing. i know that it will die as soon as the future presents itself. There will be nothing of the sort. Presented by Coca-Cola. Brought to you by Pandora. Enjoy a fresh Coors-Lite. The ads will inherit the mind.

Tell me why it will catch on without using scientistic metaphors. If we apply the scientific method here, there’s no evidence that people want it. The history of VR rejection goes back 50 years now.

Already did. There are already hundreds of millions watching movies in theaters and playing games at home. There wasn't always. That's evidence that people want it. Contemporary VR tech is also much stronger than it used to be.

can't you imagine these settings, a thousand times better, vivid, colorful, without a VR set, in your head
