I think the difference between FREE and OUT shows how the inherent differences in a language modify the work being translated. I would also use FREE in most of the translations here, as I think most actual translators would. It both flows and works better than a translation of OUT. Yes, this changes the poem, but translation always does.
For anyone on /lit/ without personal experience on reading works both in translation and in the original language, this thread should serve to teach why >translations are memed as much as they are. Here you can see how, although most of the information remains the same, the mere act of translating the words to a different language transforms the poem.
Now ask yourself: Is this translation as powerful and effective as the original? Why not? What is the difference?

i think theres another sense to 'out' being overlooked here. 'Free' is generally seen as a positive attribute, but a concerned observer who just witnessed one of his ancient enemies destroy an entrapment of his design is not experiencing it as such; it's not so much that the tiger is free, as that he's wild and on the loose.

The poem plays on a fear of the primordial other rather than celebrating some commonplace enlightenment notion of liberation, which is why it resonates. An external fright prompts internal reflection, all without addressing the reader/observer as such.

What we ‘first’ hear is never noises or complexes of sounds, but the annoying child, the buzzing camera. We hear the visitors on the march, the north wind, the bored lion growling, the cigarette alit… It requires a very artificial and complicated frame of mind to ‘hear’ a ‘pure noise’. I’ve always read the poem in this way: Man, who has supposedly mastered the natural world, and whose ideological idolatry blasphemes against nature or nature’s god (Gnon), recognizes his hubris and his heresy and is silently craving judgment. The Tiger is representative of the fearsome ‘god of the copybook heading’ who we’ve tried to lock away for so long. Human constructs are tenuous, cages and civilization alike, and when they fall apart there’s hell to pay, but at the same time life (however briefly) is lived authentically—the eyes see clearly, not through any sort of lens. another potential source of enthusiasm, other than doomsday euphoria: Gnon himself is the narrator. The poem is incredible because it manages to do what Kipling’s poem did in 1/20th of the time, and it conveys its message without holding the readers hand. Nael lit upon some fundamental piece of wisdom, and managed to convey it in all of its raw simplicity. The Tiger is a raw diamond, unset. We see it for what it is.

the poem has a very greek, pre-christian feel, but it is quite at home in the 20th/21st centuries. As heidegger quipped, the dawn and the evening dont look so different.
