I do know one girl whose favorite book is Catch 22, but when she's not doing work with the rest of us 95% of her time is spent streaming Overwatch and shit.

The book is not the problem. It just seems so predictable that the only book I'd see anybody reading in an English course full of people who don't read is YA books, Highschool classics (still classics, not devaluing them) and Harry Potter. But a woman reading 1984 in 2017, presumably instigated by the comparisons to American politics, it is like saying the only research this person can be bothered to do, within their designated major, is dictated by headlines. Sad!

But people are vapid. This isn't news.

I'm physics and had a great class last semester called European Intellectual History that went about the same way. Amazing professor with a fucking great selection of readings, but he wanted to have discussions instead of forcing us to take reading quizzes, so half of the class sat there silently every day and the other half raised their hands to read directly off of the wikipedia articles they had open on their laptops.
We had to "respond" to papers from the other people in class once and it was a shitshow. I still have access to them and if there weren't names attached I'd post them here. One of the options was analyzing Paolo and Francesca from the Divine Comedy and most of the class got no further than "this line has Christian symbolism which makes sense because Dante was a Catholic."

If you are versed with the mechanics of a game that has a competitive scene, watching people who are very good at it go up against each other can be engaging. But, there are a lot of games which have an air of complex, deep competitive potential that is mostly manufactured and sucks people in. Those kind of games are popular, but don't really have any serious depth to glean from their mechanics and competitive gameplay.

"Sexual capital grows in one place to a huge mass in a single hand, because it has in another place been lost by many.... The battle of sexual competition is fought by cheapening of sexual commodities. Therefore, the larger sexual capitals beat the smaller. It will further be remembered that, with the development of the sexual capitalist mode of interaction, there is an increase in the minimum amount of individual sexual capital necessary to carry on a relationship under its normal conditions. The smaller sexual capitals, therefore, crowd into spheres of interaction which Modern Chaddery has only sporadically or incompletely got hold of. Here sexual competition rages.... It always ends in the ruin of many small sexual capitalists, whose sexual capitals partly pass into the hands of their conquerors, partly vanish.

I guess this is true. From my experience in high school I was considered an average paper writer. I'd mostly get C's and could sometimes get a B. But then in college for some reason professor's seem to like my writing. Maybe it has evolved since high school, but I really doubt that. Like in a Political Science 101 class we had to do current event assignments every so often. When we turned in the first one my teacher wanted an extra copy of mine to show to the rest of the class what a model for the assignments should be. And in another English class we had to do a short assignment for some historical background in a book. I basically summarized articles I read in my own word (citing them of course) and my teacher's response was that it was captivating to read. What the fuck? Are people in college really that braindead at writing?

the main problem seems to be that people don't care to do the work, so don't do any reading and don't write toward the prompt at all. I also got better grades on my papers in college because professors didn't really care about that shit anymore.

I believe the specific question was:
>What is it, in that moment, that moves you to save the child?
I answer that it cannot be concern for the child, if we are to claim a priori that saving the child is the right thing. (And that was the assumption. I believe we had agreed first that we would prefer to live in a society where the child is saved.)
It is easy to imagine a situation where we do not have concern for the child. Either we would have to admit that in that case it is alright to let it drown, and thus take back our assumption that the right thing to do is to save the child, or it must be something else.
Neither can it be a third party, for here we have the same problem.
Neither can it be the law or some contract, for here we would simply leave it to drown if we could reasonably assume that nobody would find out.
Contemporary universities don't believe in God. That leaves ourselves.
It is for our sake that we must do it, in order to fulfill our duty.

What else would it be other than duty?

You're right, if there is no incentive to save the person, then we wouldn't.
A scenario where we might: If the person who's drowning is genetically similar, whether family, tribe, or even race, it becomes more about maintaing evolutionary strategy.
You want the child to survive because it gives your genes(or the next closest genes to you) another chance to reproduce should you fail.

Another scenario might be if it's a woman, who might become a potential mate.

You save the child because it is your duty. There is likely someone who cares for that child, and that someone will want it to be saved, as you would if you cared for it.
By choosing not to save it, you are granting yourself a special right. You would demand from everyone else that they save the child in such a situation, but you myself would not?

One of my finer achievements back in school desu.

I think one of those papers I wrote “Josef” Stalin and “Adolph” Hitler every single time and my prof circled every instance

I find it distressing that it's so easy to "choose" your friends in the modern age, so to speak. Lack of technology and means of transportation in earlier times meant a forced proximity to people who had very different worldviews and interests to yourselves. In a cultural context, they may not have been that different in that you would be exposed to the same kinds of societal norms, modes of entertainment, etc. but there is a marked difference between making friends with the people in your neighborhood and seeking friendship in a forum dedicated to a very specific or esoteric interest where people who are different from you are already filtered out. An essential part of the human experience is developing friendships with and empathy for people different from yourself. It's highly rewarding and is a foundational aspect of personal growth.

It's ok man, I was in a discussion-based class this semester in grad school and fumbled around a few times with my responses too. It sucks in the moment but the first step towards getting good at something is being pretty bad at it. You'll also be amazed at how little people care or remember your "mistakes." If you're legitimately interested in the material keep going to the class, you have nothing to lose except intellectual growth.
