So I'm reading Grace of Kings and I like the warring kingdoms antics so far. Only real gripe I have is Kuni Garu inexplicable feminist attitude regarding women. There's absolutely no way a guy in his position would say the things he says, it's totally incongruous with the rest of his character.

I would be really pleasantly surprised if Assassin's Quest was a well rounded, good book, honestly. I enjoyed the first one. The second was a ... real mixed bag. Great character development (except for Chade and Regal, ESPECIALLY REGAL) but it felt like I read a few scenes more than once. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand R. Scott Bakker. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical psychology most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Bakker’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike R. Scott Bakker truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Bakker’s existential catchphrase “I wrote a book where Conan fucks a hole in the ground,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. I mean Dresden is still a huge tool like most UF protags but isn't a shithead like most of them, the plots and supporting characters are interesting, and the series hasn't turned into "Anita Blake and the Mystery of the Werewolf Gangbang" or anything.

The first two books were originally Butcher's homework from a creative writing course he was taking, his teacher thought they were worth publishing and got him in contact with a editor. The third one is better and after that they improve to a uniform quality.

Though I would complain about the series right now because he's basically put it on hiatus to write a steampunk series with talking cats or something.

starts of slow. has excellent world-building and characters.
suffers from what most fantasy novels suffer from though. terrible pacing. and MC is a terrible mary sue.
its worth a read though but jim butcher has been lazy recently and hasnt actually released anything new. the last dresden files book has been hinted at for 4 years now.
also in the case of the dresden files if you can listen to the audiobook. it honestly elevates the series a lot because its read by james marsters who has an excellent voice. one of the books is really bad that way though because james wasnt available and another guy had to sit in due to some scheduling conflicts.
all in all its worth reading/listening to. but be warned youll be blueballed hard because the series isnt done and its been 5 years since the last book.

Honestly, Tolkien is outdated. Meaning in our zeitgeist he has fallen out of style. The doe-eyed good/evil dichotomy and the overlong descriptions and the expansive mythology just doesn't work in our time and age. I was never much of a fan but I get what people see in his works. It comes from mythology. Go far enough north and eventually, historically, you can't anymore/people just don't come back when they try. But there's more stuff up there.

He just has to be shown to have a reason why he has those skills (assuming they're well above average for the profession) and to either
a) be placed in situations where his skills don't apply and thus he is flawed
b) take enormous, conscious and inconvenient pains to avoid situations where his skills don't apply, and thus is believably limited

Like if your character is a genius hacker, that's fine. But how does he do changing the lock on his house, or with a clogged toilet? Can he talk his way out of a speeding ticket?

Or, same premise, but, how does he avoid dealing with these problems? What sacrifices does he make so that he never has to deal with talking his way out of things?

Generally, however, this feels like a more demandingly introspective and philosophical installment than the preceding two.

I'll have finished by tomorrow, and then its the last book soon after, and then perhaps Urth Of The New Sun, but there seems to be mixed opinions on that book.

City of Bones by Martha Wells walks the line pretty well. I would argue that Treason by Orson Scott Card does as well, although that's more openly sci-fi, but still has a pretty significant fantasy feel due to a sort of enforced low-tech society.
Carnivores of Light and Darkness by Alan Dean Foster plays around with both genres quite a bit as well.
