Has anyone read this postmodern doorstopper? Is it any good? How would you rank it with Gass, Gaddis, Pynchon, McEllroy, &c.?

It's funny in a surprisingly raunchy way, and the main character is a virgin so it will probably be easy for most 4channers to relate too
It does go on too long though. I'd say I enjoyed the first 450 pages but realized I still had another 250 to go and it became a bit of a slog to finally finish it.

I got about 200 pages in, It's painfully slow and `funnily' over-complicated. Liked parts of it, but it really is too long and indulgent.

And it's funny in a because-he-said-it-in-a-funny-accent type of funny. It eventually does wear out it's welcome.

I haven't finished it but have read enough. The writing is pretty amazing, especially since Barth was still in his 20s. The story isn't all that compelling is the problem. I also don't think it's a postmodern book, it doesn't seem like one at all.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've never heard of this and now I want to read it. Is it funny in a ahaha-pynchon-goofs-and-gags kinda way?

No, more in a making fun of Victorianesque manners and society way.

It's easier going than any of the one's you mention. Ridiculously hilarious with a thoughtful, sad conclusion. Read Giles Goatboy next if you like it.

I was interested in Barth, so I read The Floating Opera and The End of the Road. I thought they were pretty good, but I never committed to The Sot-Weed Factor.

Seems like early pomo (1960) so more akin to early Gaddis and >>10310265 what he said
