I'm a theatre student, making something about spirituality. I've just finished Go Tell It On The Mountain by James Baldwin. It got me interested in gospel, but I'm also exploring Alice Coltrane's music. What interests me is the idea of losing yourself in some higher power, all together, an intense feeling of Godly (or whatever) force, of purpose.
Do you have some recommendations for some literature or theatre? Movies and music and visual arts are welcome too, anything really

Unironically this. Start with essential history, mythology and Homer then you can move on to explore the Greeks take on "losing yourself in some higher power". Read about the pythagoreans and the Orphic/Dionysian Mysteries. After that read Greek tragedy.

Alice eventually became what is effectively a Hindu nun, so the Hindu scriptures are definitely something you should check out. I've read the Gita myself (Flood/Martin trans) and it was a proper trip.

John was also into the Bible, Kabbalah, the Tao Te Ching, Kristnamurti's writings (which Bill Evans recommended to him), and Plato's writing too. So all of those.

You're right, but what I like about Go tell it on the mountain are the stories Baldwin tells about casual people. Big tragedies in normal people.
The Iliad is about heroes, extraodinary people.
I know my fair share about Greek mythology and tragedies, but thank you, will check out the Orphic and Dionysian Mysteries.

Really recommend getting into Graham Hancock's works, pretty broad-sourced dissertations on consciousness, spirituality and the connection of both withing varying cultures and their backgrounds.

Here's the article that got me into his works. Really entertaining too.

Recommend that site in general for anyone interested into contemporary spiritual discussion and a good literary method.
