A pastiche or pulp fiction or something specifically? Was the book enjoyable?

Thanks for the recommendation.

>> No.10279155

>>10279101
It is a pastiche of the kind of pulp science fantasy that Kilgore Trout would write. But it also emulates Vonnegut himself, not in his cynicism, but definitely in his absurdity and humor. In a way it's a pastiche of both Vonnegut's and his character's works. It's a weird combo that ends up a bit like a proto Hitchhiker's Guide. It isn't always well received and KV himself didn't really like it, so you may or may not enjoy it. I thought it was perfectly fine and an apt recommendation because it isn't well known.

A lot of Cyberpunk books deal with the subject in one way or the other, see that section in the Sci Fi charts in the OP if you want some starting points, I would recommend seeking out William Gibson's Neuromancer or Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash if you're just starting out and then expanding from there.

>>tell something of the last book you read
The last book I read was Learning to Eat Soup With a Knife. I thought it was disappointing and the author relied too heavily on institutional British sources for information on the Malayan Emergency. There was also surprisingly little original content/synthesis given the amount of information the author collected.

The last SFF book I read was A Night in the Lonesome October. It was rather lightweight but quite comfy; I liked it.

This was a fun time travel novel from L Sprague De Camp (1939.) A 20thC American archeologist is in Rome when he is struck by lightning and transported to AD 536, and Ostrogothic Italy. He uses his wits and knowledge of 20thC invention and science to make a living - beginning with brandy and book-keeping. This in the face of local Gothic ignorance, Roman venality, and Church superstition, from which many of the novel's humorous moments arise. The protag eventually becomes embroiled in local and international politics, where he undertakes grander schemes to strengthen the Ostrogothic Kingdom in the face of Belisarius' Byzantine invasion; in come the printing press, catapults, and army modernisation, and a good deal of clever scheming. A good mix of historical detail, light hearted comedy, romance, action and intrigue, 5 dinos out of 5.

Is Dalinar really a cuck? Let's look at the evidence:
>Fell in love with and lusted over his brother's wife for years and married her after his death. This is pretty close to textbook cuckoldry.
>Got married for political reasons. To bow to the whims of the State is cuckoldry, especially when the State was his brother Gavilar. Later murders this wife on a mission for Gavilar.
>Wasn't even present for the birth of one of his sons, while his wife was back in Kholinar. Who knows if Renarin is even his?
>Gave up a shardblade to a man who tried to kill him in exchange for some bridgemen, though he did get a shardbearer out of the bargain, but the shardbearer almost let an assassination attempt through. Even, I guess.
>Ineffectually shouts at the Stormfather, who is a pathetic old man aping the actions of an even more pathetic man who is now dead. Plugs the Stormfather into his own mind, and then can't even summon a Shardblade. What a cuck.
>A kindly trustworthy elderly man with absolutely no ulterior motives, who sends Dalinar nice dreams of peace rather than the Stormfather's dreams of war, asks Dalinar to give up the burden of his pain, which has been haunting him for years even though it wasn't his fault. Dalinar dwells on his pain hard enough to warp reality, when entrusting it to the nice and friendly man who genuinely cares about him would have been a much better way to go. He turned down limitless power and passion and a position as Champion. This is the ultimate cuckold.

I started reading Sandersons Mistborn, one of my first fantasy books. So far, it seems generic as fuck. The evil empire, the tortured avenger mentor, the poor underdog girl who is actually a super high potential. I have seen and read this a thousand times.

Not uninteresting, since the pacing is fast and to the point, (in chapter four or so, they are already discussing concrete plans to overthrow the main antagonist) but I dont see how Mistborn is any more imaginative than, say, Harry Potter.

Does it get better later on?

Kaladin still hasn't fucked Syl
Adolin learned his sword's name and she responds to him faster than the 10 heartbeats at a climactic moment. In Shadesmar she looks like a girl with scratched-out eyes. She's very cute but not really in a fuckable form
Szeth's swordwaifu is pure and not for lewd things

>>>/pol/ is that way.
Moash kills Elhokar, feels nothing, is sent to kill Jezerezeh'elin and does so with a hemalurgic spike, and still feels nothing. His characterization makes more sense if you remember that he is basically the exact same character as Kaladin, down to motive, but taken too far - he tries to rally other slaves, hates the people who killed his grandparents, is a spear prodigy, tries to lose himself in work to avoid pain, both think a lot about how armies are run and whether it's being done fairly/efficiently. Same guy, with one important difference: Kaladin kept fighting to live instead of to kill. Kaladin's rejection of the assassination plot is also a rejection of the side of himself that would kill Elhokar.

I doubt he'll be the Champion (my guess is Navani), but I do want to see what Odium makes out of his pieces.

I finally caught up to Warlock of the Magus World, it only took me a solid three weeks. Fucking 1140 chapters!

I'm not really sure why I'm still reading it at this point. Maybe Stockholm syndrome. The MC is alright, though less interesting now than at the beginning, but the side characters, JESUS FUCK, the side characters are UNBEARABLE and there are MULTIPLE HUNDRED CHAPTER ARCS SOLELY FOCUSED ON THEM! The fucking shadow world was the worst so far, thank God it was at least on the shorter side and all the characters are dead. The World of Gods is just a shittier repeat of the beginning, with all the originality replaced with DnD.

Everything up to the Twilight Zone was great, after that it was still okay up until Lava World and everything after that has been just barely acceptable.
The main issue is that there just aren't any characters anymore. Everyone who shows up either is totally worthless grunt that will never amount to anything, or a boring generic enemy that schemes for 20 chapters and then gets defeated instantly. And without any characters that are even close to on-par with the MC, all that's left is the chronicles of a man so boring that hundred year timeskips occur without anything happening, and so emotionally dead that sentient computers, undead skeletons, and primordial incarnations of universal laws seem like hotblooded shonen protagonists by comparison. The fights don't even make sense anymore, everything has gotten so gigantic that there's no sense of progress between them, and the schemes have gotten so high level they've looped back around to being retarded, where every arc there's a conga line of *keikakus behind you* until finally the MC cockslaps them all into submission.

>> No.10283070

>>10282986
Yeah the author lost all motivation towards the end, apparently he did very little forwards planning and kept writing himself into holes.
The world of gods arc blows ass and is universally considered the shark jump moment, really par for the course with web novels though.

I will how ever say that the first half up to the end of Twilight zonenis fucking gold and deserves a light novel or possibly full novelization but the guy who wrote it doesn't want free money

>> No.10283110

>>10283070
>up to the end of twilight zone
yugh, Twilight zone was the beginning of the end. Gigantic timeskips, meaningless dumbass characters and plotlines, endless filler. The whole thing was just waiting for the end. Literally, that was his plan, just fucking wait. Everything RIGHT UP TO entering that teleporter was good, then we get into "fuck around mode" and never quite managed to leave it.

Any other suggestions? While it's pretty shit now the beginning was good. Preferably something less wizardy/fantasy, like a kungfu martial arts thing. Preferably with characters besides the MC who are more than hackneyed characatures.
Come to think of it, is there a xiaxia with an actual legitimate antagonist? Someone who stays relevant throughout the powercreep? Or even just characters in gneral who keep up? Or are all the MCs absolutly unrivalled loners?

>> No.10283229

>>10283110
Yeah there's just no way to handle the later stages of a setting as large as WMW in a web novel with its 1-3k word chapters.

I think I enjoyed it for the same reasons you hated it though, characters being left in the dust during an actual journey felt adventurous to me.
Unfortunately he got stuck on the magus world cultivating in wizard towers instead of setting out to explore it, encountering the snake dowager naturally then fleeing from her while he cultivates on his way to the world of the gods.

>is there a xiaxia with an actual legitimate antagonist?
>Or are all the MCs absolutly unrivalled loners
No, that's more of a japanese shounen thing, the idea of chinese mc's is to abandon those around you and move onto a higher class, because that's often how china feels to young men in a corporate field.

>> No.10283299

>>10283229
>abandon those around you and move onto a higher class
That's the problem, there really stopped being a higher class after a while. Sure, there still are various beings at or above his level, but they might as well be large rocks for all that they actually accomplish in the story. The higher up on the chain he goes the more boring and flat everyone is.

There's a difference between becoming a god through countless battles and adventures, and gaining ultimate power through meditating in a cave for five thousand years. In the beginning he actually had to overcome his enemies, it was a struggle and in the end he would win and then move on. Now, he just sorta waits until his opponents are invalid and then whacks them if he feels like it. Every arc he's already so superior it's impossible for him to be threatened. Instead of advancing he stays in a rank until he's totally invincible and then only steps forward when he can immediately jump to the top again.
For instance he did NOTHING in the ENTIRELY of the shadow planet arc!

I'm writing a science-fantasy novel from the viewpoint of an MLP pony set 500 years after the show. It will have a heavy focus on trans-humanism, told mostly in the context of a romance between a pony and an AI. It will take place in a rust-world universe, old and decaying, and long after the ponies themselves ascended to the stars after a post-apocalyptic turning point in their history.

Dresden Files and iron druid chronicles also touch on zombie repellent. Although I can't remember much. It wasn't a full plot about it.
I think graveyard dirt and some type of weed. Some book I read years ago had people mixing a bunch of basic shit to ward zombies.

Anita Blake was the forefront of zombie fantasy novels. I would suggest reading up to obsidian butterfly(8th book??). A few things well are touch on before that, after that book it becomes a sex novel. Not erotic, it's a full fuck series. Look at pic related a review of her 24th book to see what it has become.

Wait... it's not novels you want.. It's ideas about zombie repellent?
Follow the anons advice. Gravedirt, but not from graveyards, it could be dirt from anywhere where something died. Being a zombie they would be attracted by the living and repelled by the dead.

Ghouls would be something else. They eat the dead, so maybe use something of life to repel them. Maybe tree sap from a certain tree.
