I like these a lot too but I hate when they have just plain wrong shit in them. Like Anne Mccaffrey's dragon rider books all have insane covers. Like the publisher just found an artist and conveyed some vague details and let them fill in the rest.

It's a tragedy with fantasy elements, though it's narrative and the cover is hardly fantasy. The magical elements are almost irrelevant to the primary points of the story, which brings up too many hard questions to let the reader be comfortable placing it as heroic fantasy. The "hero" loses to his doomed fate and meets the end of Kullervo, on whom the tale is largely based. The most important themes are on the line between bravery and arrogance, the struggle between freedom and fate, and I'd say the nature of the border between murder and mistaken justice. In common fantasy, those lines are rarely relevant and fate is more often on the heroes side against evil or at least ambivalent.

Even his cloak is grey and plain, and both the black sword and his armor on that cover functional and simple, with his helm being the only ornate item and even it is not far from real helms of antiquity. The greatest part of it is the contrast between detail of the helm and the simplicity of the rest, including the view of the foggy landscape and clouds, and Turin's face. It's also a fairly straight adaptation from what description is in the text. He's a leader of men with a black sword, prominent helmet crested by the image of a dragon, mail clothes under a grey cloak. The world is young and darkness is spreading as fog and clouds coming down from a cold north, and yet he's holding himself high and apart from his men. You can see his pride in his stance. It's detailed but simple: most things simple don't manage this and resort to minimalism instead. The cover fits the work: that to me is what makes a good cover. If something so plain triggers you because it's too "fantasy", you're hopeless.

I say this as someone who dislike most fantasy covers and books. It'd help if OP posted a higher res image. I just wanted to talk about this book and used you as a means, because I'm bored and nobody I know reads much. Your negativity is misplaced but thanks anon.

I agree with you on what you said. Have to say my favorite version of the story of Hurin is in Forgotten Tales though. Something about Christopher Tolkien trying to modernize the language really irked me. I doubt anyone thumbed through it or ordered it because they saw that. People are reading that thing because they've read and like The Silmarillion. But whatever

I've never seen a cover for Smith of Wooten Major, but I've always felt like someone could come along and make a really nice cover for that
