Heraclitus attempts to account for the manifest image, although his ontology is incorrect. Parmenides answers the first vertiginous question (why is there something rather than nothing) and explains why there is something rather than nothing.

His cosmogony and ontology are inextricably bound up together. He is essentially the first to formulate the principle of nihilo ex nihil fit. The necessary consequence of this is that what is always was and never could not be, generation and destruction cannot exist because it requires that-which-is to arise from that-which-is-not. Reality is static unchanging being and becoming is an illusion.
