That's a sensible assertion depending on the context and the goals the writer is trying to achieve. Starting a work, for example, with something like "And the mud snaked toward the black horses in the gutters"—if that work doesn't refer to cycles of time and inevitability—might come off as lazy and unfocused.

That's a false grammar rule. There's nothing wrong with starting a sentence with those words and there never was. It's been used by writers for centuries; cf. any modern usage guide.
