Not to criticize though I would be amazed if anyone has actually read through all of these books. Don't get me wrong it would be considerably impressive though it must take around a decade if you are going to consider them properly. That being said I do nonetheless appreciate the chart. Because that's literally what every political discussion turns into, relatively speaking. The only source leftists put forth are from leftist think tanks and the right only put forth sources with a right bias. Both only want reassurance that their view is the correct one rather than looking at multiple unbiased sources to form a more complete opinion. But this is impossible because people "into" politics tend to make their views such a large part of their romanticized idealistic self that any affront to this view is an affront to them as a person, as an individual. The average person cannot handle the knowledge that their worldview could be wrong.

Start by reading a comprehensive history of philosophy. I read Russell's and it was good until he got to the Romantic era, at which point it completely goes off the rails. "Biased" doesn't even begin to describe it, it was a complete polemic. I've heard Will Durant's Story of Philosophy is a much better introduction.

Then if there is an era or particular philosopher you are interested in, go from there, and do research into what background knowledge you'll need to approach a given text.

/lit/ has a huge problem with writing "beginner's guide to x" which is really like material for writing a fucking phd thesis. You don't need to read the entire history of philosophy from start to finish to "get it", this is an insane waste of time unless you're getting a phd or just really enjoy the subject matter.

This is more true than not, but in defence of the right, the people on the left who are at the same literacy level (though IMO usually a lower intellectual level) don't even relate their beliefs to sources at all and base it on relating their emotions in reference to currently dominant ideology in media and society.

I love the idea of this, but I'd like to see it expanded. I practice Soto Zen, and the most important book in that school is Dogen Zenji's Shobogenzo, which is probably the most significant zen text in general. The only part of Christianity I care about is Quakerism, so adding significant texts of different branches would make sense. You certainly included the fundamental Jewish texts, but I'm more interested in the humanist/existentialist parts of Jewish thought. With Islam, the only schools I care about are the Bektashi and Alevi.

The other thing is, separating Taoism from Chinese folk religion is problematic, because Taoism is really just a grouping of many traditional Chinese philosophies. The I Ching is an important text for ancient Chinese thought in general, but it's particularly important for the more esoteric part of Taoism.

The other thing is, it would be wise to separate African sources regionally. Traditional beliefs throughout West Africa are related, as are ones in East Africa, Central Africa, and Southern Africa. But these regions have almost nothing to do with each other.
