been actually looking for good book that involve modern people traveling to alternate worlds etc.
but there doesnt seem to be any really good ones.
theres the daniel black series which is soon getting a new book. but those are really centered around worldbuilding which is nice but you can notice the author isnt very experienced.
then theres the darklord but those books are really really grim and may not be everyones cup of tea, werent mine.
i tired the builders sword but that seemed to be a kinda litrpg thing that wasnt well exectuted.

On the other hand they're by a Cracked editor and that has fallen to shit. On the third hand the first two books are somewhat old, maybe from when Cracked wasn't shit.

Several "zones" appear throughout the world where strange things happen. At the same time a bunch of people start manifesting strange powers. They're termed "contractors" because every time they use their power they have a compulsion to perform some kind of idiosyncratic action as if it were a sort of payment. I'm currently going through a meme piece by Stross. It's about how by 2020 we will have neural integrated minds, and ideas and thought will become patentable materials.

Just finished Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. William's writing isn't bad but his pacing is awful. It feels like half the series is people crawling around in dark tunnels Interminably.

Williams also withholds all his revelations until the very, very end by which time I was tired of waiting and didn't give much of a fuck. It didn't help that none of these revelations were especially impactful or hard to guess. A lot of it was disappointingly mundane.

I'll give the series some credit for being part of the revisionism that lead to more recent - and more interesting - series, but I don't think I'll ever want to slog through it again.

Which house should Daenerys marry into once things don't go swimmingly with Hizdhar in Winds? I think it should honestly be Daynes. I'd love for them to become a much more prominent force and they were practically allied with the Targs back in Rhaegar's day so it wouldn't be too out there.

Why is the silmarillion considered a difficult read? I'm braindead and probably going to be a low income individual for the rest of my life and I very rarely had to reread anything, it all unfolds like a childrens book, simple sentences, you could give this book to the nigerian agency workers at my work (who don't even know how to turn on a kettle) and they wouldn't have any problems at all with it.

It's an interesting take on the Arthurian legend. Having a female protagonist makes it stand out from other less inspired versions of King Arthur and she pulled it off nicely IMO. Don't bother reading the prequels/sequels, not worth it.

As a side note the author was also accused of sexually abusing her kids after she passed away. Apparently she and her husband were molesting their children.

The music score and cinematography aside, I think it was in some sense better than the first film, since it expands a lot on it. The only sort of conceptual beings I've ever encountered is in Doctor Who's EU for example the Memeovores that consumed the meaning/concept of outcomes (which isn't really similar to the sort of thing that you are asking for).

When I was a child, I read the Last Dragon Chronicles a highly complicated and confusing series for children involving two races of thoughtforms (the Fain and the Ix) engaged in transdimensional conceptual warfare over the human race.

Lord of Light tries involves people trying to enhance their concepts but I get the feeling that they are people trying to take on concepts rather than naturally being them.

It's a web serial, so everything was written on the fly. The writer was dealing with his brother's wedding and other problems so pacing (fights drag on for chapters and happen back to back with little downtime), plot threads, and characters all took a hit since he was rushing to meet his deadlines. I really liked the magic system however. It was a good example of combining 'soft and hard' magic together, but if you aren't paying attention to how it works it's easy for it to appear as if the protagonist and others are just pulling shit out their ass.

I tested it before and realize it's better to stick to one if I can help it. You get much more depth and direction that way, but it all depends on your style.

Most authors today do the close-third-person POV (aka wannabe first person) so you're always constantly bombarded with the chararacters thoughts, feelings and sensations only to get snatched out of it and back to some other dudes plot, its very jarring.

Multiple POVs work better when the distance to the characters is more pronounced, like in Dune.

Authors use multiple povs as a catch all for readers. One of the 3-5 povs will statistically grasp the heart strings of x amount of readers, another will grasp another percentage, etc.

Also Multiple POVs aka multiple first persons aka semi omnipotent narration, lets you explore multiple places at once, and multiple events at once, without having a invisible man in the sky telling you everything that's happening.

A trilogy worth of content spread over 12 books. I am not exaggerating, I skimmed the middle 8 books and I missed nothing. In addition to that, this series has the most aggravating characters I have ever seen. If I hadn't hated women before, I hate them now. Every woman except for one or two are violent stubborn psychos, and the story makes sure that they are right to be that, even when they clearly are not. A strong woman, is someone who has zero emotional control, lashes out against everyone, is bigoted and will reject reason. I'm only two books into him so I can't evaluate him yet. So far there's a lot of allegory for Elric's home = British Empire, but it also feels like a decadent Rome or Alexandrian city. He is an interesting character for the iconography, drug use, being at odds with his heritage, and the ambivalence towards the use of a sword that drinks souls - and his race is supposedly only part human. I would have happily read these books in the 1970s because there is an interesting bunch of conflicts to resolve.

Because oftentimes its an author's first published work, or they haven't gotten their voice down yet, and what comes after shows significant growth on their part as an author, and makes reading through the weaker first entry worth it. Some people can tolerate some early installment weirdness if there is a good payoff.
Or you can be an angry autist and hate it because its not perfect, going through your life unable to understand why people like things and don't hate everything as much as you do. That's a perfectly legitimate approach as well.
