As I watched a video on Youtube about a talking raven I noticed a theme in the comments, people saying "nevermore" or "make the raven say nevermore".

Curious as to the origin of the apparent meme I searched the word and became aware of a poem by a man I had a vague awareness of as a writer of spooky things.

I decided to watch a reading of the poem associated with the word mentioned and instantly loved it, however after numerous watchings and reading the poem I wondered what kinds of poems people were making these days and looked up videos of people reading their poetry.

I noticed a distinct drop in quality from, admittedly, the only poem I've read up to that point, and was quite disappointed. It didn't help when I stumbled on "slam poetry".

So are there any good modern poets or are we in the same situation as we are with modern art?

We definitely are. You should stick with discovering the classics for a while.
