I really liked the first book of The Prince Of Nothing trilogy: I read 54 books last year, and The Darkness That Comes Before was one of the 10 best. The second installment is so much of a disappointment
The plot seems to not move forward. By page 80 not a single new thing has happened. Boring. I thought things would get better when the action starts, but the first big battle scene lacks the poetry of the first book, and feels clunky & predictable. So if even the action isn’t redeeming, why keep on reading?
The characters seem to have lost their depth. In the first chapters Achamian keeps on repeating he is in doubt for pages and pages and pages. We get it. Move on, Bakker. Kellhus is a kind of superman – that was obvious in the previous book too – but it seems his Bene Gesseritish nature only gets more and more cartoonish. As for the side characters, all the nobles and generals seem interchangeable and generic, and seem to behave like children. To me, they felt like names and names and names, not characters.
Fuck this book.

I haven't noticed any illustrations in the ebooks either and I have over half a dozen at this point. I have noticed the footnotes tend to have asterisks misaligned to the right side, at least on a Kobo (a regrettable purchase).

Pretty new to reading sci fi and fantasy. I just got done with Hyperion. I'd like to read things to do with pagan religions (particularly European ones), any fiction with good mystery, anything to do with a party of characters going on an adventure, and anything having various religions conflict with each other (like Lions of Al-Rassan).

Excerpt from the beginning of The Charnel God, a Zothique tale, where a wayfarer falls foul of local religious custom.

---

"Mordiggian is the god of Zul-Bha-Sair," said the innkeeper with unctuous solemnity. "He has been the god from years that are lost to man's memory in shadow deeper than the subterranes of his black temple. There is no other god in Zul-Bha-Sair. And all who die within the walls of the city are sacred to Mordiggian. Even the kings and the optimates, at death, are delivered into the hands of his muffled priests. It is the law and the custom. A little while, and the priests will come for your bride."

"But Elaith is not dead," protested the youth Phariom for the third or fourth time, in piteous desperation. "Her malady is one that assumes the lying likeness of death. Twice before has she lain insensible, with a pallor upon her cheeks and a stillness in her very blood, that could hardly be distinguished from those of the tomb; and twice she has awakened after an interim of days."

The innkeeper peered with an air of ponderous unbelief at the girl who lay white and motionless as a mown lily on the bed in the poorly furnished attic chamber.

"In that case you should not have brought her into Zul-Bha-Sair," he averred in a tone of owlish irony. "The physician has pronounced her dead; and her death has been reported to the priests. She must go to the temple of Mordiggian."

"But we are outlanders, guests of a night. We have come from the land of Xylac, far in the north; and this morning we should have gone on through Tasuun, toward Pharaad, the capital of Yoros, which lies near to the southern sea. Surely your god could have no claim upon Elaith, even if she were truly dead."

"All who die in Zul-Bha-Sair are the property of Mordiggian," insisted the taverner sententiously. "Outlanders are not exempt. The dark maw of his temple yawns eternally, and no man, no child, no woman, throughout the years, has evaded its yawning. All mortal flesh must become, in due time, the provender of the god."

i've worked my way through these books this year too. was sold to me as a metaphysical whodunit, severely letdown.

first trilogy was interesting and different than other fantasy series i've read, so it had that going for it. then we flip to aspect-emperor and it's all the salvation of the world is found through proyas' butthole, the sranc and nonmen are utterly depraved, and let's slog through another 30 pages of esmenet failing to rule competently while her shitstain of a son runs around murdereating people.

it's definitely gone downhill, and bakker is so far up his own asshole. he can't take any criticism and his fansite is a gigantic echo chamber that must stroke his ego in ways that his wife seems unable to

That is so true. These people feel robin from one piece is untouched when she was a vagina amongst sailors from the age of nine, or name who would sell her ass for a necklace, or that weapons girl who "just wants to be useful" she probably passed her vag to everyone that asked.

All vaginas are loose used up holes. Fantasy taught me this, and those that aren't loose will give it up to the first ultra-chad that comes their way.

>pagan religions (particularly European ones),
The most important rec would be American Gods by Neil Gaiman. The series by Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson, Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase) are YA, but they're actually pretty well researched and informative on mythology. For a more adult action take theres James Lovegrove Pantheon series, each book is a separate world, based on the idea of if X pantheon existed or came back.

>any fiction with good mystery,
Hard to say, I'm not much of a mistery reader. There are a lot of Urban Fantasy books with private eyes and mage cops, but mostly the mistery takes a backseat to action.
For mistery itself, I would recommend the Garrett P.I. series by Glen Cook, basically Nero Wolfe in a fantasy setting, the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovich, a good police procedural, and the Lord Darcy series by Randall Garrett.

>anything to do with a party of characters going on an adventure
Most of all fantasy series have this, but for something that feels more like 'everybody contributes' instead of the usual 'MC and his entourage' I recommend the works of David Eddings, all of it, and the Dragon Knight series by Gordon R. Dickison.

>and anything having various religions conflict with each other (like Lions of Al-Rassan)
This one is harder, I can think of several series where it's organized religion after the protags, ororganized religion interfering with a kingdom, or a chosen one fighting against an evil religion/god, but straight religion against religion... Can't really remember one, sorry.

>>10072441
The Traitor Son cycle, by Miles Cameron. First book is The Red Knight. The MC is a commander of a mercenary company and a good chunk of each book is about medieval warfare and army versus army.

Oh, and something else that may interest you; I was reading through the Demon Princes over the summer and came across this excerpt in "The Face":
"Gersen went to the bar. A shelf to the rear displayed a multitude of beer mugs, imprinted with as many emblems. Gersen saw a number of familiar labels: Vergence and True Companion from Alphanor; Obladense and Old Subterranean from Copus, Smade’’s Own from Smade’’s Planet; Bass Ale, Hinano, Tusker, Anchor Steam from Earth; Mahogany Select from Derdyra, Edelfrimpschen from Bogardus: Gersen felt himself in the presence of old friends. In the spirit of the time and place he requested a flask of the local brew, Hangry's White Ale, which he found eminently palatable."

Naturally I wondered if the Earth beers were actually extant. I checked and they are! I even managed to try three of them (the Hinano--a Tahitian beer--isn't available nearby but is in CA).

>I've often wondered how much is pure imagination, and how much is inspired by his travelling, which I gather he did a lot.
In the case of the beer, I would hazard at least two are direct from his known experience: Anchor Steam is an old working-class beer from 'Frisco, the stomping ground of his early manhood, several iterations removed from its roots as Gold Rush swill.
Hinano, a Tahitian beer as noted previously, would seem to come from his time spent there in '64 or '65, where he wrote "The Last Castle".
The other two aren't as obvious; Bass Ale is a relatively ubiquitous English beer while Tusker is an east African beer. Perhaps the former could be traced to his time in the Merchant Marine (or later travels in the U.K.) and the latter to their sojourn in Cape Town.

I wonder what Vance focused on during their travels. I know they tended to rent a place and write/edit. He seemed capable of producing detailed local cultures at will in his writing, usually without any great degree of judgement which to me indicates he was greatly skilled in observing local differences without falling into the trap of corrupting those memories with his personal biases. I suppose John would know...

>Have you read his autobiography?
>I heard it's pretty much about everything except his writing
I have and that's true; it's more a summarized biography of himself. Even his own feelings on events he lists in his life are muted. My gut feeling is that he was intensely private, at least at secondhand distance. In any event, his travel recollections are mostly of the, 'we spent some time here and wrote this' variety rather than 'we went here, did this, I noted that which led to the idea of the witches of the Weirdlands.'
>>10074207
>You can probably reach John through the JV website too, though I gather he's quite busy...
Yes, so I would imagine and I'm loath to pester him when no doubt so many have asked and had these questions answered, not least the members of the VIE project. I also wonder how much, if I were in his shoes, I would enjoy strangers from the ether contacting me about my father's life while having little interest in my own.

If it's from a Weird Tales contributor and in a recent print (i.e. lasted the ages) then chances are it has merit. Obviously Lovecraft, who I rate. Clark Ashton Smith, equally. Robert Howard, sometimes good, other times cringeworthy.

I find it fascinating to compare these writers and their qualities. If I had the wherewithal I would construct an SFFG-worthy meme of these three amigos of weird fiction on a white podium: Howard Lovecraft's disembodied head on a the first place, with his sheepish smirk; Howard finds these displays a little unseemly but he is inwardly appreciative. And the congenial Californian Clark Ashton a close second, a photo finish, nothing in it, may have been first on another day, and happy to concede to HPL; and the inwardly insecure hatted figure of Robert Howard in third, a solitary blue tear rolling down his cheek - his perfect action men protags would be embarrassed.

I'm not actually sure I'd call anyone else a primary target, and that is because Vance is the only one of my four favourite authors who has been religiously published in specialized editions, which I'm mostly after. Collecting paperbacks and trade hardcovers is an absolute PITA if you (1) don't live in the US or UK (depending on author origin), or (2) the author doesn't have a solid foundation of fellow collectors available, or (3) the book isn't an acknowledged classic. By that I mean it is especially hard to source those rare 1st editions in good condition, and that shipping fees are exorbitant.

So, while I get pretty much everything, say, KJ Parker has written, I don't try to track him down with the same intensity as with JV.

So, aside from JV, I actually have a more shotgun approach in that I follow some small presses (old and current), and then try to get something from them that I know I like.

halfway through vol 1 of lotr and so far it reads like YA fantasy, can I just skip to the silmarillion and unfinished tales for more depth and then continue with lotr?
is it really necessary to see the stuff referenced in lotr before reading about the history influencing the stuff in the silmarillion?

Why is it always recommended you read lotr/the hobbit before the works that show the history of the world before lotr takes place?

>> No.10074931

The Devil You Know is a semi-continuation to Blue and Gold, so not that. The Company is the only novel here (the rest are novellas). Personally the Company is a favourite of mine, but I know it is actually considered the worst of the standalones by many (go figure). From that basis, I would perhaps suggest Blue and Gold first, which I thought was more entertaining than Purple and Black.

Alternatively, you may want to try out some of his short stories, many of which are available for free on the net. Your choices are (as far I could research):

Essays:
Cutting Edge Technology
On Sieges
Rich Men's Skins; A Social History of Armour

Fiction:
A Small Price to Pay for Birdsong (WFA winner)
Amor Vincit Omnia
I Met a Man Who Wasn't There
Illuminated
Let Maps To Others (WFA winner)
The Sun and I
The Things We Do For Love

From this, I would suggest A Small Price to Pay for Birdsong. So either that or Blue and Gold, or if you really want to try a novel, go for the Company.

>Why is it always recommended you read lotr/the hobbit before the works that show the history of the world before lotr takes place?
Because the recommendation is made thinking that the recipient is a YA who will grow along with the work instead of a mid-20s Millenial who is looking to fill the void in their personality with anything at all.
In a less biting tone, once the hobbits are clear of Tom Bombadil, and to a lesser extent Rivendell, the story proceeds on a less fanciful arc.

You could of course read the Silmarillion at will but it's dry and encyclopedic by comparison. Gandalf and the hobbits add a human dimension where the Silmarillion reads more like Norse mythology combined with Biblical genealogy.

What's the deal with the Elric reading order? Some people read them in order of publishing, while some read by the world chronology, but others just seem to stick to reading the 1970's novels. Are each of the novels largely self contained, like Robert Howard's Conan stories? Or are more episodic with developing arcs and characters across the arcs?

I've an omnibus coming in the mail that collects stories in this order and I was wondering what to read first:

Elric of Melniboné (1972) The Fortress of the Pearl (1989) The Sailor on the Seas of Fate (1976) The Dreaming City (1961) While the Gods Laugh (1961) The Singing Citadel (1967)

No need to apologize; I thoroughly enjoy discussing Vance and have yet to find another fan in local meatspace to sperg out with.

It's truly a tough call. The Cugel books are Vance's humor at maximum density and that's probably my single favorite characteristic of his writing. The Cadwal series I consider his most thoughtful and well-rounded work. However if there is a counter ticking over somewhere, tracking my re-reads, "Clarges" is probably in the lead. It is lacking in deliciously understated humor but I find the story wonderfully engaging: perhaps because Waylock is so singleminded and self-possessed, willing to operate within convention when treated justly but remorseless when all else fails. Some of that last is because I watched "Platoon" tonight and my fresh impression is that ultimately, the individual decides justice; the system is an illusion.

Sorry, this post is longwinded, perhaps pretentious and still doesn't have what should be a simple answer. Gun-to-my-head? Cadwal. Hammer cocks back because that's three books, you rambling oaf? "Clarges".

What's yours? Oh and what led you to Vance?

So, checking out a collection of Vance's short stories, I first read The Dragin Masters, and have been enamored ever since.

Right now I'm reading through the Durdane trilogy: just finished The Anome last night. Fairly good, though ironically I think it should be just a bit longer, feels like he's cramming a lot of world building into few pages.

>“We want a room,” said Corson, banging her fist on a table.
>A portly, well-dressed man approached, regarding them with disapproval. “Our rooms are all taken,” he said. “Perhaps down the street ....”
>Corson smiled. She opened the pouch at her belt and pulled out a few gold coins, tossing them in her palm. “A large room,” she continued. “The best you have.”
>The owner bowed. He classed Corson as a soldier fresh from a successful campaign. Nyctasia he dismissed as a penniless student whom the other had undoubtedly picked up for the night. Students as a class were notorious whores.
>He waved a servant over. “Show them the corner room upstairs. Lay on fresh bedding. Is there anything else you require?” he asked, turning back to Corson.
>“I want a bath,” Nyctasia put in. “Hot water, and plenty of it. And something clean to wear.”
>The innkeeper looked at Corson inquiringly.
>“It’s all right,” she said, with a sweeping gesture. “Get her anything she wants.” She grinned at Nyctasia, who suddenly flushed as she realized how things appeared. Swallowing her pride, she meekly followed Corson upstairs.
>Corson was delighted with the room. It was large and well-aired, with windows looking on the courtyard and the street. Tile bed was wide, with an oaken chest at its foot, and a table and two chairs stood at the hearth. There was even a sheepskin rug, Corson fell onto the bed and sank into the down mattresses, laughing.
>“Get your boots off the bed,” said Nyctasia.
>“A little more respect from you, slut. I’ll have you thrown into the street, where you belong, if you don’t behave.”
>Nyctasia sighed. “I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself.”
>Corson pulled off her boots and dug her toes into the rug. “I’ve always wanted to have my way in a grand place like this.”

The Elric omnibus I ordered came in today. Why is this noteworthy, I hear you ask. Well, it's bit bigger than the mass market paperback I was expecting: 15.5x23.5cm. This is a 1993 Millennium print, obviously a deluxe format judging by the size, and the pages still being a bright white colour beyond the tan edges; acid free paper, or a conscientious previous owner. Not sure how it would work at those aspect ratios, there not being many widescreen books. The bookcover idea is kinda out the window at that point. Maybe as a movie poster but that doesn't really fit the concept or the theme of the thread. Or did you mean crop a clean image down and then remake the macro?
