The funny thing is that it wasn't a philosopher who made that chart. It was some PR fag. It's also fucking wrong in several places.

I'm not going to go into some of the more obvious individual wrong-ness, but the most obvious glaring wrong-ness with the chart is that it treats fallacies as if they are being used by some sort of moustache twirling villain to be defeated in reddit dialogue combat. As opposed to someone who made a genuine mistake in reasoning.

I'm not saying they are, I'm saying the text in question (the fallacy chart he is referring to, often seen on places like /pol/, where I believed it is stickied) treats fallacies solely as being used by someone with bad intent. Most of the fallacies on the chart treat it as someone using it to try and trick you, which just isn't wrong descriptively, but goes against good argumentative norms in philosophy like the principle of charity or even back further with the Greeks where you had some sort of dialogue between philosophical friends engaging in a search for truth. The chart is basically treating fallacies as some sort of zero sum game of "gotcha."

Appeals to logos are supposed to be based on good reasoning. The idea that you should use bad reasoning patterns flies in the face of both historical and good rhetorical practice. It also shows a level of arrogance for the audience in question in the rhetorical situation. It's assumed that they will fall prey to the faulty logos. Stating that they are likely to be deceived by them assumes some sort of access to the cognitive and rhetorical abilities of the audience. As most of the Greek and Roman orators were aware, no orator really has this ability. In fact, if there is someone in the audience that then engages you in eristic, you've just left yourself opened to an attack on your ethos by being a manipulator. Hence, why it is important to make one's appeals to logos in a virtuous manner, as in some ways it is tied to the opening appeal to ethos.

It's a useful form of authority to those with power, because unlike their own power, science has the trappings of infallibility and truth; to the layman science is always right. Science is the educated unbiased smart people using a system of bias-removal to inform the public about the reality of the world around them. The possibility of the scientists or the system itself being subverted against its/their own principles simply isn't in the public lexicon. It's impossible for them to imagine, and that belief is held up by a bulwark of propagandistic messaging by the mainstream media.
