Notes from Underground.
When I was in Amsterdam there was another one they had up at the Rembrandt house, painted by an apprentice I think.
It was a Biblical scene, of a man's encounter with a woman at a well. I don't think it was from John -- old Testament more likely. It was the layout that got me.

There was another at the Van Gogh museum, one of his contemporaries. The painting was centered on the backside of a building -- no windows -- that dominated the horizon. On one side you could see into a lighted street (it was at night) where couples were out, and on the other was more decrepit housing. I don't know the title of this one either.
