This book would be much better if Tartt added a black janitor as a comic relief character in whom the 5 friends eventually confide.
He would say things like "you crackas did WHAT to that little white fella?!" or "you in some deep shit now ya sisterfucking bitch"

How do you feel about the novel The Secret History By Donna Tartt /lit/?

Just a potboiler lacking in literary merit? Or a Future Classic?

P.s. Bunny did nothing wrong

Just finished this, and I don’t know why but I’m addicted. It’s as if Donna Tartte put a group of /lit/ psueds in a class together, the characters are absolute dumbasses about the real world. For some reason it’s far less emotional than I would have expected based on the premise, it’s actually rather bleak. General discussion, feed me your thoughts.
tldr; Bunny did literally nothing wrong

Books for this feel?

Woah, I didn't know studying Classics was this cool. I'm about to attend Uni this Fall(after a year of waiting) and am now stuck between Classics, English, and Philosophy. Does studying Classics make you a better writer/fluent in ancient greek?

Why did /lit/ tell me this was good? Aside from name dropping some greek shit, it seems like typical YA shit. Filled with shitty caricatures of college students, typical muh guilt theme that has been done better a million other times, and a bunch of edgelords unrealistically sitting around doing drugs and translating ancient greek texts.

Okay I finally fucking read Tartt's Secret History. I enjoyed it a lot. Thank you /lit/.

The first half was comfy as fuck. I wanted to major in classics when I was a teen, and all the references to Greek grammar and literature give me a warm nostalgic feeling.
I want to read something else with the academic and cozy feel of the first 5 chapters. Any recommendations? Already read Forster's Longest Journey. Should I put Brideshead Revisited on my list? Should I read more Tartt?

However, I feel like the second half was mostly dead weight with a couple highlights towards the end. The second half feels like the author is writing fanfiction for her own characters almost. The book should have ended after the murder imo.

The Secret History is better (and not nearly as much of a slog to finish) but less ambitious than Goldfinch.
