So I'm reading Pynchon's V., and I just finished the third chapter. And what the fuck did I just read?

So this Stencil guy is looking for this V. woman --just because -- by spying on people who are somehow and vaguely connected to his father who knew this woman. He does this by seperating himself from his personality by refering to himself in the third person so that he can, at will, literally turn into other people?

So what he does is that he follows this party of people, among others this Austrian guy, what turns out to be some kind of robot, a guy with leprosy etc. around Egypt while posing as among other characters an arab taxi driver who's lost his faith, a German girl who works in a beer hall and so on.

Bit by bit Stencil, through these characters he becomes, discovers that they are somehow involved in the Fashoda conflict of the end of the 19th century, which makes no sense as the last time we saw Stencil before this chapter, he was in his forties and the year was 1956?

And then the last part comes where I'm not even sure which of the characters where Stencil... The red-faced man who attacked the leprosy man in some theater and was killed by him by way of some kind of light which seems to have come from the leprosy guy's eyes?

Seriously. What's going on here? Thinking of attempting to reread the chapter and see if it will make it more clear, but then again I've understood it's absurd to want to understand everything that is going on in Pynchon's books?

Does anyone happen to know any good reads about Ecstasy? I've been searching for some books on it recently and would be incredibly grateful if someone could help me out with a suggestion.

Thanks in advance.
