Ok /lit/, here is my project proposal for what I might be spending some free time doing over the next few months, just for fun. Any criticisms/feedback?

I am going to take as a starting point the prevalence of racist and misogynistic posts on 4chan’s /b/ board. I am limiting my analysis to /b/, but by this I do not mean to say that such posts are not also to be found on other boards (looking at you, /lit/.) In this analysis I will employ the ideas of Foucauldian discourse analysis, in order to examine the enormous creativity and fecundity of the structures of power that underlie this particular community of voices, structures which have undeniably generated enormous amounts of racist and misogynistic content.

What I will not be doing is trying to extrapolate from certain posts the psychological figure of a “/b/ user.” I will not try to see what kind of *people* create these posts (the kind of self-defeating methodology of, say, SRS.) Instead I will try to examine the micro-level relations of power that give rise to the same kinds of statements again and again. I will also not be taking as subject matter what I find to be “offensive”, but look first at posts where power manifests itself most obviously.

I hope to achieve through this analysis a way of understanding how the /b/ community can form such prolific discourses on race and gender without needing to attribute such creativity to a certain kind of psychological character. I will attempt to show that the statements made on /b/ are necessarily the product of pervasive power relations. I also hope to show the spaces for dissension and possible points of attack on the vast power structures underlying /b/, because (and here I make a normative claim which I do not attempt to justify within the scope of this project) all power structures should be challenged.
