Hey guys, what's the current version of the japanese /lit/ pack that gets passed around here? I have V6 but I know at one point a V7 was made and people were submitting stuff for V8. Is the guy in charge of that around still?

Hey friends,

I just downloaded the recommended Japanese /lit/ from here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?rdsuyaq7g9mwrru

I was wondering where you think I should start? I have no experience with Japanese literature whatsoever except for Eiji Yoshikawa's Musashi.

Read everything on the two Japanese literature charts already?

I love Eastern literature. I've mostly only read Japanese and Chinese lit so far, but I've thrown in a bit of Korean literature as well.

I personally have more favorite among the Eastern authors I've read than I have favorites from Western literature, but that's probably because I've read so many more books from there.

As for the Shakespeare/Cervantes, Chikamatsu Monzaemon is sometimes referred to as the Japanese Shakespeare, and Murasaki Shikibu is comparable to Cervantes in that she wrote the first modern novel (which is also very highly regarded), The Tale of Genji. Those two are two of the more essential authors in classical Japanese literature.

For Chinese lit I've mostly been reading in the modern period, but as someone else mentioned, the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese Literature stand up extremely well.

Better version of Akutagawa's Hell Screen (including A Spider's Thread), Sanshiro, Kusamakura, and Zen Haiku by Soseki, The Old Capital by Kawabata, and The Pitch Runner Memorandum by Oe. And maybe some other stuff, I dunno. If you'd like any of the shorter ones off this list that aren't in there yet, I might try and do those.

My concentration area is Japanese literature, with the Meiji and Taisho (1860 - 1920) periods being my more specifics areas. But I still read a ton of post-war stuff too.

I'm into a ton of subsets of Japanese literature as well: Noh and bunraku theatre, children's literature, Tokugawa era poets, lots of stuff. The Meiji/Taisho period is the only one I'm comfortable saying I know much about though, since I'm still relatively new to most of those others.

I'm also slowly getting into East Asian lit as a whole, but my Chinese and Korean literature experience is far less than my Japanese lit one, at the moment.

But yeah. I made this chart a few months back which I thought would make a good overview for Japanese lit recommendations, if anyone is curious.

Well, I doubt I'll be able to get anything else out of this thread. Thank you for your help anyway. If nothing else, it's good to know there are more people around that like Abe Kobo's work.
If I ever get around to acquiring the short story I'm looking for, if you guys are interested, I can translate it into English as well as Portuguese and post somewhere, if I can.
I'll leave this thread up until it gets mothballs, though. Japanese Lit general discussion is quite welcome.

shadow of the wind by zafon was a page-turner. it had the pseudo-detective thing going on like much of murakami's shit.

ryunosuke akutagawa's short stories are great. murakami even wrote an intro for rubin's translation (who translates a lot of murakami's stuff).

kafka is pretty surreal. but you probably knew that.

i like jap-/lit/ in general. some anon made the pic with this post. save it. google the books on it to see if they might interest you. there are tons of good ones on it.

Here's this chart. I can give you info on any of these if you'd like, but I'd recommend all of them. They're in chronological order too, if you care about time periods.

Bah, alright, done. Very roughly organized, but moreso by far than the first one (though I like it better random).
