I wanted to read the brothers karamazov but gave up after realizing I can't identify any of the biblical allusions, and probably most other literary allusions. Should I read the bible? And what other books that aren't so chalk-full of allusions that they're written in the margins of other books should I read first?

Is there even any point to attempting biblical analysis without speaking the original languages? I'm not even two chapters into the Gospel of Matthew and I'm already discouraged by the ambiguous meaning of the moving star as well as the birthplace of Jesus being described as a "house" rather than an inn. All I want to do is approach these texts as a secular historian but there are just so many different translations and all of them are politicized to varying degrees.

C/D: You will never be a good author unless you start with the Greeks and you have read the Bible.

Why would anyone waste time reading The Bible? It's boring, irrelevant even among Christians, and offers little spiritual or philosophical insight. Is there any reason why I should read it?
