Good evening, gentlemen. I would like to open a thread about philosophy. This is a general thread, so you may discuss whatever you wish; that said, if there needs to be a subject, let it be this: what should one read, chronologically?

Otherwise, feel free to ask questions and specify your own subjects.

I love theology too, so if anyone knows philosophers who heavily dealt with the question of God, share. I'm not, however, interested in atheist thinkers, having had my share of those already.

I've just finished Plato's Republic as a part of my chronological journey into philosophy. Before this project, I had already read quite a few authors from various eras (Montaigne, Aristotle, Sartre, Pascal, etc.)

I'm thinking of moving on to Aristotle's Metaphysics, although, currently, William James is tempting me with his work on religion.

Civilised thread, keep the 4chan gimmicks at bay, keep that insecurity down to a level where you maintain the dignity to answer like an honest man and feel no urge to belittle one another. Act like you're face to face with everyone.

Disclaimer over; now, I want a philosophy thread. I used to study philosophy in High School and then I took a class at university, but gave up and decided to read on my own because philosophy at university is little more than the history of philosophy.

Now, fast-forward ten years. Working full time, decided to go through all the major works in philosophy.

I started with Plato's Republic (started in October 2012, almost finished), and I have a few more ahead: Aristotle's Metaphysics, then Kant's Critique of Pure Reason.

Before all these, I've read a good dose of ancient skeptics (Sextus Empiricus) and more modern ones (Montaigne).

Any suggestions?

ITT: philosophy essentials.

>inb4 "why do you read so slow?" My job takes much of my time, and it's hard work, so oftentimes, I can only read a few pages before falling asleep.

I started reading Plato's Republic; it is the first step in my return to philosophy. I would like to, basically, read chronologically up to today, the most important volumes humanity has written.

ITT: you list ten classic works of philosophy that you consider the canon.

If you can't, you can still list ten works of philosophy you think are excellent and recommendable.

Let's see what this survey delivers.

What the fuck? I'm reading this book - it's supposed to be a cornerstone of Western philosophy - and all I see is homosexuals arguing? What the fuck? Seriously, the whole goddam thing is just dudes arguing, and when one argues, the other is like, "Yes, certainly," every fucking time! That's so unrealistic; I thought Plato was a classic author, it turns out he's no author at all!

Why does anyone even care to read this crap? WHy is this a classic? I can't believe it. And one more thing: the names. It sounds as though Plato is making an effort of inventing names that don't actually exist. "Thrasymachus," can you even say that with your anus? I didn't think so. I don't even know how to pronounce this shit! Why go to such lengths to make your characters so alien from us? And where the fuck is the plot if there are characters? The text is nothing but dialogue, or close to that, and yet nothing's happening! It's worse than The Hobbit.

Seriously, guys, what the fuck.
