I have read thrillers like Matheson's I am Legend before and have read sections of Palahnuik's Haunted but never read a book that chilled me to the bone. I have before I had trembling, terrified hands while turning the page of a novel, and I wonder: Do these books really exist?

ITT: Scary stories you made up to scare your friends from childhood:

I just saw this story on the news yesterday. There was a family that just recently moved to a new house in a new neighbourhood. The house was actually pretty nice: it had no history of any hauntings or violence occurring in it. It was a nice normal house in a nice normal neighbourhood: very quiet and pleasant, just like this one. Anyway, the family moved in without a hitch. The new owners were a married couple of 15 years, and they had one young son. Since there were renovations being done in some parts of the house, it so happened that the young boy had to sleep in the basement while the parents slept upstairs. The boy was really scared about this temporary living situation, but he tried to look brave for his parents, and pretended it didn't bother him much: his parents however, clearly saw that he wasn't comfortable with the situation. They offered the boy their bed to sleep in for the night, but he refused. When night came and it was time for the boy to sleep in the basement, he said good night to his parents and went to the cot-bed waiting for him in the basement. He was so scared. Every single creak and sound sounded 3 times louder than it should. He could swear he was hearing something. He thought he saw shadows and things in the house. He put the cover over his eyes.

Cons
-Strawman holocaust
-Nonsensical descriptions (colours can apparently be violent)
-Extremely repetitive and inefficient
-Cookie-cutter existentialist philosophy (described in John Galt’s radio address)(Objectivism)
-Clumsy and hammy
-Preachy
-Stereotypically jewish
-Demented logic and reasoning
-Grotesque use of Rand’s pitiful life experience to accent the story of her novel
-Ceaseless ass kissing to the American upper-class
-Absolutely no mention or defense of the great capitalists of the past using children under the age of 12 to work 12 hour shifts in coal mines
-Needlessly long
-Fraudulent in that the first two chapters are nothing like the rest (Everyone knows the saying “the first two chapters are the most important to publishers).
-Boring
-Reading it feels like you’re betraying your love of reading
-Waste of hard earned money

OMG we all go to U of T!?!?!

Mcgill is going to be my Canadian lit teacher. Anti-calender says that 84% of students would retake his class:"Students mentioned that the volume of the coursework was quite large and difficult to get through. However, many found the course material varied and interesting.
In regards to McGill, students felt he was very enthusiastic and engaging with the course material, and approachable for questions. He was well-prepared and a great instructor overall."

What are some good horror/thriller books? Looking for some that will scare me.

Though none with any weird shit in it, not looking to be overly grossed out or anything like that.
