>and so I recall an old joke about how much of a price Lenin put on discipline during the Russian civil war. During one winter of the war the Red Army began experiencing record numbers of desertions. Lenin himself issued a new order to his mid-ranking officers saying that all deserters were to be brought back to their post and immediately shot. Alarmed by this measure, Trotsky convened an emergency meeting of all the members of the Bolshevik central committee to discuss measures to stop the desertions. Trotsky argued that executions were too harsh, and that deserting soldiers had simply not been indoctrinated enough to give their lives to the revolution. Stalin said "I agree". Lenin strongly disagreed, famously saying "one does not nurse a tumor, one cuts it out!" And Stalin agreed with that as well. Flustered, Trotsky turned to Stalin and said "don't just agree with both of us! what do you really think!" And Stalin responded saying "we are short on precious resources right now, and I really think that if you line them up properly that one bullet should be able to take care of two deserters"
