well, academics are academic. I basically agree with two points zizek seems to stress often: (1) leftists should stop looking for a messiah to give them the masterplan to overthrow capitalism, and (2) much of the problem of 20th century socialism was an absence of thought and reflection - we acted too quickly and thought too little.

so yes, of course activism and action is needed, and perhaps urgently. but it is a bit erroneous to expect it from academics, who I think are truly valuable in the modest separation from immediate pragmatic concerns, who can reflect on them, comment on them, assess them, and criticize them free of the blind and dogmatic urgency to uplift them like dutiful official philosophers

the curious fact is that of academic marxists Harvey, who OP posted, is reasonably active and pragmatic (right to the city, contributions to urban planning, and so forth).
