It's a tautology. Animals that are beneficial to the system pass on their genes. Otherwise they don't. How can there be no overseer when all these animals interact with each-other in a larger system - furthermore that this variation isn't utterly random but clearly biased towards certain trends. This becomes increasingly clear also when you look at convergent evolution. It's simple meta-causation. If matter was simply inanimate, how are physical laws? Physical Laws aren't in themselves material, but they are organizing principles that order all matter out of it.

You know, I didn't like The True Believer very much. It just seemed to me a very mediocre book, many of his statements seemed obvious (the people most likely to be revolutionaries are those that don't have a lot of attachments to the current system--DUH!). Though there were some parts I did like (his account of the intellectuals that create revolutionary ideals, some of the stuff on the leaders of revolutions), If you have a solid grasp of the character of ideologies, crowd psychology, and common-sense sociology and history knowledge you won't get too much out of it. If I had read it 3 years ago, I probably would have loved it. But now it falls short for me.

How many of the people watching them would have even read philosophy texts anyway? Alain de Bottom is a just a businessman making money off the back of midwits who want to feel educated (a remarkably similar mindset to many on /lit/ nowadays), nothing more.
