I own this, and it's great. I starts with the pre-Socratics, and goes all the way to the postmodernists. It also discusses the eras and personalities surrounding the philosophy, so you get a sense of a historical progression, rather than isolated ideas with no larger context. The author is a good writer too, and presents it like a story narrative rather than a textbook.

A historical overview of philosophy was a helpful starting point for me. It starts with the pre-Socratics, and goes all the way to the likes of Derrida. Pic related in particular is as good a read as you will find on the subject, and it discusses some history and circumstances behind each person and school. It gives you a sense ahead of time where you are going, and you'll have a sense of the broader archs and major recurring issues in philosophy, which adds context if you choose to go into greater depth with individual philosophers.
