How do I learn to appreciate and feel emotion when reading novels that focus on these subjects; romance, death of a family member, marriage, children, family, social mobility
These things all bore me to death, even in the most renowned classics

For example l really enjoyed moby-dick, blood meridian and butchers crossing but whenever l try to look at novels from my own country (britain) or other european novels l just feel bored reading them because a lot of the time they usually focus on these subjects

Are there any English novels of literary merit that aren't about; romance, death of a family member, marriage, children, family, social mobility, dystopia or coming of age?
