I couldn't get past the fourth book, OP.
I enjoy how descriptive Jordan is, and the almost innocent charm he imbibes his characters and their thoughts with. It's probably the closest you'll come to recreating the charm of the Lord of the Rings.
That being said, it is far far too long, and reading it is far more laborious than the more accessible Song of Ice and Fire. Do not go in expecting the very sexed up dark fantasy of Martin, but perhaps a more long-winded, less groundbreaking Tolkien.
Others seem to like it, so you might.
