>And so the Trojans buried Hector breaker of horses
Why is the guy who ran away for most of the book the one whose death caps the story, and what does his breaking of horses have to do with anything?

Sincere question. Sure, there were some interesting scenes, but I couldn’t really bring myself to give a shit about much of anything that happened.

Felt like a definite step down from the literature I was reading before; it was as if I’d went from watching critically acclaimed thrillers, to then watching a cheesy action film

But that’s just my opinion, and I’m making the thread to ask for others’ views

Hi what is the best prose translation of the Iliad? I have a Dutch friend who can't really understand the verse translations and I cannot find a Dutch translation.

For works that were supposed to be sung/orally performed do you prefer a translation that preserves the poetic form and prose sheme or a scholarly translation trying to be as close as possible to the original?

So I Finisher the iliad today and to be honest it is not AS good as people say. It's not a bad book, it is just kinda overrated.

I liked the language, obviously homer describes things very poetic. I also liked many parts of the General Story, especially towards the end.

I don't like how the Story Cuts off while the war is still going on but whatever, I can look over that.

However I feel like half of the iliad is just random people getting killed in battle which is not interesting in the slightest. The whole iliad could have been like 150 pages shorter imo. (My Version was 500 pages). It is just Generally repetitive.

So yeah I liked parts of it and respect it as an important part of literary history, but I think it is kinda overrated.

Is this the most boring classical literature in the world?

It basically goes like this.
Adonis, son of George Stephanopolous, grandson of the coupling of Jackie Onassis and Zeus, esteemed in the eyes of gods and men, hurls his bronze pointed spear at Yanni. But the goddess from My Big Fat Greek Wedding watches and breaks the spear in half as it strikes Yanni's leather shield. Anger fills Yanni's loins and he strikes Adonis at the neck where the veins with blood run wide, and hews him solidly on the nape. The dark blood flows and the dark mist covers Adonis's eyes.

Repeat for 400 pages.

The most overrated literature ever created. Odysseus is 100 times better.

I've been told Pope shouldn't be read first and I should start with a different translation. Is this true, if yes - who?
